Wrapping up the Weekend

I don't remember a year that featured so unbelievably much unbelievably good riding weather. It's too bad this one has to end. I doubt we'll ever see the likes of this again. You know, what with global warming and all.

Really now, what of that? We might have had a couple of nasty hot days this year - like the day of the state TT - but that's about it. Aside from some rain this year hasn't been exactly a global warming showcase.

This weekend, ah yes, that's what I was talking about, this weekend. It worked out to three excellent days of riding for me. I took a flier from the office on Friday early enough to catch some late afternoon rays. I had a good, long and not too hard ride on Saturday in anticipation of a group hammerfest in the hills today, Sunday.

The only thing that wasn't spot on was today's ride. The hilly beat down today. Our ride's organizer got tagged but good yesterday afternoon. His helmet saved him from whatever might be worse than the concussion he has. Get better, Todd. We need you back on the road.

Regular plans scuttled, I headed out for a nice bit of tempo to get my attitude just right for tomorrow's return to the office.

Forecast for the week: Rain. See, I told you this wouldn't last.

I do not blame him.

I have always been one to rave about helmets. After a shot like that, one can not help but think what could have happened. That old rant I typed is no longer valid...I have added reasons for wearing a helmet.

My recent crash was like most in that it was totally unexpected, and happened during an "easy ride". What is still blowing my mind is the amount of damage that the bike and body take on.

Originally, I thought that I had some minor healing to do and some small parts to replace on my bike. Closer inspection revealed that the hit was way beyond what I thought. I was sure that my helmet simply slid on some pavement...turns out the side of it is flattened, it saved me from something I hate to imagine (being out on the road, down, unconscious, and relying on a random stranger to find me and get help).

I no idea what Todd is thinking or feeling regarding his mishap. I can tell you for absolute certain that mine could have been so much worse, and for that I am thankful.
