Wednesday Night Time Trial #5

Twenty-nine of us turned out last evening for the finale the 5 week long Wednesday Night Timetrial series. That's a far cry better than the 5 of us who made it out last week in the cold and rain. I think it's safe to say weather plays a role. Yesterday's conditions were much more inviting. Temperatures were in the upper 60's and the winds slowed into gentle breezes just a few minutes before race time.

I'm happy to report that I finished top of my field once again, completing the sweep of the Cat 4/5 class. Time to upgrade, to Cat 4.

Official times and placings haven't been posted yet, but I already know from my power data that my wattages were nothing special. If anything they were down a bit from earlier efforts. It goes to show how much weather plays a role in the outcome of a timetrial. Why the weather? Because in addition to lower watts I had plenty of other places where I gave up time:

  • I started out in the small ring! This I noticed when I attempted to shift from the 11 onto the lock ring
  • Yet another slow turnaround! I have to get out there and practice going in tight circles in the middle of the street. This time I overshot by a too-wide margin and then nearly ran off the far side of the road
  • I forgot, again, to shift down coming into the turnaround. This, of course, left me struggling to get on top of a big gear once I got the bike pointed back toward the start

That's 5 races and I still don't have it right. I think I need another series' worth of lessons. I've become a painfully slow learner in my old age.

Weather conditions at race time:

		Temperature	Dew Point	Pressure	Wind
		F (C) F (C) Inches (hPa)	MPH
6 PM May 14	68.0 (20.0)	46.9 (8.3)	29.93 (1013)	N 12
7 PM May 14	68.0 (20.0)	46.0 (7.8)	29.92 (1013)	Calm

Serious Form

Dude, you beat Russ Murphy and were within a minute of AC. I think you should jump cat 4 and go directly to cat 3!

It's good to be Coggan

Thanks Bobber. Yes there were some fast guys out there last night. I felt good, and maybe even a little out of place, to be in the same minute as some of them.

Andy's got a couple of big advantages that make him truly a tough competitor. In addition to his years of racing experience and meticulous attention to his training, he's light and he's aero.

Oh, and there's this other thing about riding his wife's bike. I wish I had a picture of Angie's bike. Last night Andy rode Angie's Cervelo P3C track bike. The particular shade of red it's painted ... stunning. It's a gorgeous bike. That's gotta be worth a few extra seconds. It looks like it's moving when it's sitting still.
