Since last Fridays killer ride out at Clinton lake, I've been in a funk. Coulda been all the beer and staying up till 5 in the morning weathing the giant storm that pasted thru our campsite. A blazing campfire and good conversation makes time fly. So Saturday rolled around and all I managed to do was a short 45 minute trainer ride. Very uneventful. Sunday came and yet more beer, no riding was had despite the awesome weather. Monday rolled around and even though I had plans on going out and doing a century plus, waking up to the rain made me sleep in. Again, I was lazy and didn't even throw a leg over any of my bikes.
I've been training hard lately, and I've been feeling it. So maybe a few days off was what I needed. After tossing in bed last night thinking of what a lazy ass I had been for the last few days, I vowed to go out and hammer it tonight. I decided to do the 28 mile TT out and back I frequently do.
I'll make a long story short, it was super windy and overcast skies. The wind was a cross tail wind on the way out, which made for easier riding. The way back not so much, the wind picked up and changed to a head wind. We had gust of a little under 25 miles per hour this afternoon.
I felt great on the way out, record time, 35 minutes flat. The ride back didn't feel so hot. It hurt like hell and battling the wind and hills took it toll on my core and back. I was riding in the down position as much as possible and I haven't been used to it, as I noticed on the way back.
I posted the finishing time of 1:18:30... A full 4 and a half minutes faster than the last time I did this route about a month ago. And almost 10 minutes faster than the first time I did the route on the TT bike a couple of months ago. This isn't your ideal TT route. It's full of hills, and is rarely out of the wind. Needless to say I was pleased with my result and pedaled home in a most estatic exhuastion. My goal by the end of the year is to have it down to 1:10. Doing in an hour flat would be amazing, considering the hills the route throws at you. Maybe next year...
You'll be a TT'er yet
Funny you're training and learning to TT. I was talking to a friend at last weekend's TT. One of the things he pointed out to me was how similar he found MTB races and Timetrials. I'd have to agree based only on my limited MTB racing experience. They are very similar. Pacing is important. Not blowing up is critical. Pain and suffering are givens.
Good that you're able to mix up the training - mixing road and trail - while keeping it on target to your race discipline.
Well, either that or we're going to turn you into a regular TT'er. :)
I dig it
The whole TT thing that is. It's a killer workout on the core system. I pretty much have to mix it up, I would love to ride trails everyday but that's obviously not happening. I'm sick and tired of this weather, I've been on my road bike twice as much as my mountain bike this year. Oh well, guess I'll still do what I've got to do. One of these days I'd like to do a TT with you and see just how much improvement I need.
