Tonight a group of people converged at the trail head for a night of fun. As we readied ourselves for the ride, we could hear the sound of thunder in the distance...this was the sign of strange things to come...

As we rolled away from the trail head, no one was sure what the future would hold, but we all were aligned in our resolve to have a good time. The further into the woods we got, the darker the skies became, but the cooler air seemed to draw us in. Shortly after we cleared the first field and entered the second set of trails the rain began to fall. I think we all felt a little younger the instant that first drop of water hit our faces...I have no other explanation for what happened the rest of the evening other than we all stepped back into our childhoods for a while.
I do not recall any rides that I have enjoyed more than the one we had tonight...may be it was the rain...may be it was the group.
After we finished the ride we headed back to the cars and some decided to get clean by diving into the lake for a brief swim. Imagine the sight of grown adults diving into a lake after riding in the rain...Once everyone returned back to the gathering area the conversations started. We discussed about a billion goofy topics tonight...mostly talking about how strange the world has become. I will spare you the details of the topics discussed (suffice to say we talked about some pretty outlandish stuff).
Ironic really...We all sat around talking about goofy stuff and hos strange some people seem to be, but I don't think anyone ever stopped to think how strange we must have looked to those who drove by in their cars. A bunch of muddy adults riding bikes in brightly colored clothing, coming out of the woods and jumping into the lake.
All in all, we were a nice group of cyclists that returned to our childhoods for a few brief moments, giggling like kids talking about nicknames (Essay, Quarter, Renegade, etc.), and telling stories of getting propositioned in bars. I guess there are a lot of strange people in the world, and I am one of them...but it sure feels right to be in a group of like-minded people that you can act like a kid with.
If you have not acted like a kid lately, I suggest you try...it is more fun that you might recall!
Somewhere in the middle
You're somewhere there in the middle between being a kid and being a kid again. You're an adult and when you act like the kid you still remember so well you think it's strange and cool. Don't get me wrong here, it is strange (as in, infrequent) and cool for an adult to act like a kid. When you get past this middle stage you'll know that sort of behavior just a normal thing.
The truth is, behavior like that shouldn't be considered strange at all, not at any age. And of course it's always cool.
Think about it like this. How inhibited are your kids? I bet you could tell some stories. Somewhere along the line they'll put stoppers to a lot of that inhibited behavior. They'll be out there in between for a while. When they get older they'll begin to realize life was a lot better when they could act like a kid.
Social, recreational, sport and competitive bicycle riding are not adult pursuits. I think cycling keeps us connected to the childhood we left behind and the childhood we'll get back to someday.
Wish I could have been there
Oh, and you better believe I wish I could have been there with you guys.
I do too...
If you had been there, you would have had a blast.
You are right on about kids...we talked about that. Specifically when a youngster gets a chigger bite or an itch and they scratch it...regardless of where it is (and they are).
It seems that the only adults that are comfortable scratching in public are baseball players...may be they have something figured out that the rest of us have not?
I guess I don't really want to see adults with their hands down their pants either...but it sure is nice to talk honestly and openly once in a while.
