Riding outside on the roads that is...
Met up with a group for a gravel road ride. We basically found the same thing that 2-old found on his venture. Our group was better prepared for the road/trail conditions. The fun really started when it began to warm up and the base of snow turned to sandy goop.
This little ride turned out to be a real challenge in almost all categories. This ride required handling skills at times (deep snow drifts and soggy mud), high torque (soggy mud and loose gravel), and high cadence drills (packed portions and paved roads where my riding partners had multiple gears in their arsenal).
I felt like I got a decent outdoor workout for a change...sure it was not a HARD effort, but certainly more work than I have had in recent weeks (roughly zero outdoor training hours in the past week).
Here is a photo of the tundra-esque conditions we rode today.
Cold and lonely
Man I love that photo. It looks like you guys are in the middle of nowhere. The lack of trees and any variability in the terrain makes it look really really frigid.
trick Photography.
That shot is from a VERY desolate area. There is no trickery there...but the temps were great. It was about 36 or so, which made the snow very sticky and slick. Once you got soaked through and through it felt cold, but we kept moving so we stayed very comfortable (in spite of being covered with sand, muck, and soaked to the core).
