I was going to go run on the trails today, but the ice/rain mix we had made me decide to ride the trainer instead. I have no power chart to share, because there are no electronics on my bikes anymore. I did ride for about an hour and 15 minutes though.
A recent post of mine had me thinking...you may recall the one that had the picture of me 20-some years back on a BMX bike? I was thinking of a simpler time, and simpler music.
I played some of my music collection from the early 80s as I pounded out some good effort on the trainer. At the end of each song I stood for 30 seconds. I also shifted up several cogs. I have no idea what the power output was. I found myself not downshifting as many gears after each out-of-the-saddle effort. In short, each song ended in me grabbing a higher gear after a 30 second standing effort (a workout that 2-old recently blogged about).
So anyway, I was recalling a time when I was more successful racer....I had more wins than losses....I rarely came home with less than 2nd or 3rd. The only point in bragging about my success, is to point out that I did not consciously train in any way during that part of my life...I just rode my bike a lot. All summer long, I would get up, and ride all day from friends house to friends house on a SS rigid bike. During the school year, I would come home from school and hop on and ride all evening. Crummy weather like this would not have stopped me either....I need to get some of that back...my lack of whininess and excuse making.
What is my point? I don't know...I guess its good to be a kid...its good to ride for fun. It is also good to have people like my wife and kids wanting my time...They are worth it, and deserve more of it. I have to now ride efficiently so I can be the best "me" for my family....no riding and all stress makes a Unit grumpy.
I am going to try to whine less in 2007. Life is good, go ride...even if its on a trainer listening to Motley-Crue....and don't get wrapped around the wheel with training details like this poor little guy.
