commuting anyone?

Yesterday, I decided to start commuting again. I guess it was the outrageous high temps and humidity that made the idea attractive? Anyway, I hopped on the trusty 29er SS MTB and started pedaling at 6:15 A.M. Not too bad, but the return trip at 5:15 P.M. was a little warmer.

I had forgotted all the great things about commuting. There are some downsides, but the upsides are great. I arrive at work with less need for that first cup of coffee, for one. The things I see along the way are another. People are hilarious! I love feeling all pious on the inside when I see that guy driving the SUV smoking a Cigarett at the stoplight (I typically drive an SUV, but I dont smoke).

Don't get me wrong, I am definately a fan of gasoline consuming transportation, I just think it is fun to haul my own ass to work once in a while.

If you do the math, gasoline is still cheap. My daily commute is costing me way more (2.3 times more to be exact) in botteled water, sports drink, and caloric intake that is not typically needed with reduced activity level. I would be happy to argue with anyone that thinks bikes are a great alternative to the automobile. As I see it, they are more fun to ride as long as I don't have to haul anything over 20 lbs, it is not raining (or snowing), and I feel well. Otherwise, my SUV rules (I can haul 3 kids and a wife for 20 miles for less than 3 bucks right now). I can not travel 20 miles on my bike today for under 3 bucks (think about it).

No, I am not ready to stop showering, and start protesting the "system". I like my SUV just fine. But do I qualify as a Hybrid travler because some of the time I power with fossil fuel and other times I use alternative power?
