Two days worth

Yesterday was a big ol’ flop. I set out to ride outside for the first time in the New Year. I woke up and it was damn cold, but I thought I could man-up and road ride anyway. I am sorry to say that I am either too resolved to have more fun this year and/or not enough of a man to have fun in 12 degree weather (standing wind-chill was 4…rolling wind chill, was insane!) I made it about 5 miles and 20 minutes before I jerked the plug with every fiber of my being. When I got home I rode myself back to human on the rollers…that took a bit over 45 minutes of moderate/easy tempo. I honestly did not have the zeal to do much more after that shellacking I took from Mother Nature.

After reading Mark’s entry (yesterday), I was motivated to step out of the mundane “base” training I have been doing lately. No way I was going to do a double training session yesterday, so I started stewing over what I would cook up today. Usually when I cook up a workout over a 12-24 hour period, I come up with good one and dig deep. I do not want to bore you too much with a lot of diatribe about riding a bicycle indoors so I will give you the bullet points.

I set out to do about an hour of riding on the rollers with my crapper tires as make-shift resistance units. I have not tested these, but I am quite certain that on 2.25 inch rollers they are capable of shredding even the strongest legs.

The plan was to ascend through the gears to very-near failure—twice. I would listen to two songs, grab a gear, and keep going until I am either crashing, or crying.

In the end, I accomplished my objectives, but it took a little over an hour. It is pretty early in the year for this sort of intensity, but a little stress will not kill me and it sure cures the boredom. When you are done with a good workout, you know it, you feel it, and you feel good about it…you know what I mean.
