Yesterday was TT number two for me this year. I raced the 2008 Tour of Hermann Timetrial.
Conditions were cooler (53.1°F | 11.7°C) and more windy (9.2mph | 14.8km/h | 4.1m/s) than I might have preferred; but you never get to pick the weather on race day. The course and wind directions worked out to be a cross wind for the first ~1 mile followed by ~4 miles of headwind to the turnaround. Total length of the timetrial: 10 miles.
A quick look at my wattage chart shows a minor victory in that I managed power output fairly well. I held myself in check in the early going, the outbound leg, only exceeding my average power for the entire TT on a couple of occasions. On the return leg average power ramped up just a little bit. Nicely executed, even if I do say so myself.
My wattage numbers, in fact, were surprisingly close. The outbound leg's wattage was just 2 Watts less than my overall TT wattage, which was in turn 2 Watts less than the inbound leg.
So how did this old guy do? I placed 30th among all 161 starters. I took 1st among my fellow Cat 5 starters.
The top three finishers put over 2 minutes on me inside of 10 miles. Wow. I'd sure like to have a look at their power files.
664
I do not consider myself superstitious, but if I ever pulled number 666, I think I might have to ask for another number.
The world needs to know this. Our very own 2-old is a sandbagger. As a Cat. 5, he finished in a time that would have given him a Gold medal in Cat. 4, and 7th place as a Cat. 3. Not bad for someone old enough to remember when "Campy 10 Speed" meant 5 in back and 2 in front!
10-speed
Yeah I used to have a 10-speed. There was a time when 10 was more than anyone thought you would ever need. Now we know that's clearly not true. In many cases one is enough.
It doesn't say so anywhere in the results, but Joe Walsh finished yesterday's TT just 6 seconds off my pace. Not only did he ride his track bike, but at one point he had to stop to put his chain back on.
Great numbers
You put down this sort of power this coming weekend and I think we know who the new Tour of St. Louis cat 5 champ will be. Well done.
Time to upgrade and race
Time to upgrade and race with the rest of the Ultra Big Sharks this weekend.
