#*@$%& Tire Mounting

Boz's picture

Last week, I picked up some Continental 4000 Grand Prix black chili tires for my TT bike. Last night I tossed the Velox rim tape onto the new Zipp 808 front wheel proceeded to attempt to mount the tire. For the life of me, I cannot get the last bit of the Conti to crawl over the rim of the clincher and seat on the wheel. This is by far the hardest tire/wheel/rim combo I've ever dealt with.

I've watched Zipp's video on tire mounting and short of using the tire lever, I've done everything they did. I guess life with the Zipp will be this way due to their taller rim profiles. My challenge tonight is to get this sucker to seat.

Once I've got the tires mounted and the last bit of Nokon cabling done, the bike will be ready for photos which I'll be sure to post up.

I've seen Zipps with Velox

I've seen Zipps with Velox and installed tires on those wheels, but pairing a conti with velox on a zipp is a huge PITA. That's why Zipp recommends against velox. Find some thinner rimstrips on and your job will be a lot easier.

Packing tape

Zipps have almost no bench (or drop center) in their hoops. I would urge not using Velox which is great stuff for almost any other rim application.

Instead pick up some 3M reinforced packing tape or Stan's yellow tape (I have lots if you need it). This stuff is razor thin and is the choice for applications such as this. These also are among the lightest weight solution to the problem for the weight weenie in you.

Just to be sure...you are installing the tire so that the last little bit of bead that you are trying to get over the rim is aligned with (immediately next to) the valve stem right?
