Yesterday I went to a bike race - to spectate. The race started at 11 AM, so the no-brainer plan was to combine the trip to the race with lunch. I almost missed lunch altogether. The race was a 100 miler on rollers. With the competitors constantly in plain sight I found I didn't want to leave. I wanted to stay and watch.
Sad, isn't it, for someone to admit he could spend 4-5 hours watching someone else pedal a bicycle in place?
If you're reading this you probably understand. You may even be thinking that's healthy. Certainly it's more healthy than watching golf on TV, right? Hey, it's more healthy than watching anything on TV.
I think I was simply in awe of the idea of riding a century on rollers. Could I do it? With a lot of help from spectators and friends, maybe.
I rode a third of a Century on my rollers today. It wasn't too bad. I could do it again.
Could I do it twice more though, with no rest, no breaks?
That would be hard.
Funny stuff
I read about events like that last year and thought about trying it. Unfortunately that is as far as I got with the idea.
A Rolling Century?
I don't know which idea is more twisted: trying to ride century on rollers or watching others try to do so. Either way, it's pretty sick. Would you be able to watch TV while you rode? That's the only way I could conceive of spending that much time on a bike that wasn't going anywhere.
Sure, on a road bike
Sure, on a road bike it wouldn't be hard to watch TV, listen to music, eat, or drink during a roller century. I wouldn't recommend any kind of bio break though (and that includes sleeping) :)
