The Yield of the Ride

Most rides yield sore legs, a lot of sweat, and plenty of miles. But today’s ride was one of a different sort. I do most of my little errands in town by bike. I don't much see any reason to drive from spot to spot when I can ride. Not only is it healthy, but its a great way to do a recovery ride. Oh and it's a great way to throw up the birds, and give a big FU to Mr. Oil man.

Here's what todays ride yielded...
Grocery Ride

I have definitely noticed that commuting has been more popular lately. Especially in Warrensburg, where you can get from one part of the town to the other in less than 15 minutes, and that's creeping.

Eric, my roommate, just bought a Surly Crosscheck about a month ago. He does everything by bike now, granted it's not raining cats and dogs. He went from spending over 20 dollars a week in gas, down to less than 5. At this rate, the bike will pay for itself in less than 8 months.

I ride my regular cycling shoes when riding, because I rarely am in any one spot for more than a few minutes. If where ever your going requires decent shoes, you can always buy a pair of these...

If it's super hot outside you might want to throw a extra shirt in your backpack or messenger bag. Not only can you use the sweaty shirt to dry off, but the fresh shirt will have you looking freshly clean.

Bike locks are a must, especially if you have to leave your bike outside. You can usually take your bike inside a bike shop, but some businesses don't allow bikes inside. Here is the lock I usually use. They are fairly light compared to most, and you can wrap them around the top tube and slide them forward while riding. No one wants their whip stolen when out on the town.

If we all just made a couple of our journeys in town each week, then it would make a huge difference. Mr. Oil doesn't like it when we don't drive, but then again I don't think many of us like spending our hard earned dollars on over inflated gas. Here's to sticking it to the man.
