I am not really talking about the *brand name* surly. There seems to be a trend lately.

I spend a fair amount of time on the online forums and blogs and have noticed a trend in recent weeks. People are becoming surly and short tempered. It may be a sign of dropping temps, shorter daylight hours, and greater difficulty in getting in a ride that normally would burn off your angst.
It seems that people are starting to use forums and blogs to funnel their rage. I have seen some crazy stuff lately and people are wasting a lot of time (self included).
Recent knock down drag out arguments have ensued over such topics as specific (lower) gearing options, crank options, bike business dealings, and general bike set ups. Folks, if you find yourself unable to laugh at the typical jabbing that you frequently read on the web, you need to get out and ride!
Last night that is exactly what I did. I put on the light and headed out to the normal loop. G and I hit it up like old times. We resolved to ride slower and try to stay comfortable (it was cold), but there were some fun sections where we let it fly.
I rode some down hill sections as fast as I could (not as fast as I could *at night*). I positively railed some descents and scared the hell out of myself a couple times. It was just what I needed! May be you need to try it too? It sure beats flaming some troll on line!

Surly is about right
It does seem as if the animosity level is high lately. Good observation.
Maybe it's a natural thing. You know, circadian or something. We're all in gathering mode getting ready for a long hard winter. What must the So. Hemisphere people think about us?
I too....
I too have stooped to the Surly Poster level. I can not resist stirring the pot once in a while.
I think it is fair to say that it really goes both ways. There is a huge influx of silly ideas and questions this time of year as people head indoors and start thinking about what to buy/build for next year. Here are some examples recently posted:
What is the lightest 29er wheel? Answer -- Wouldn't the lightest 700c wheel would be silly on a MTB?
Will 700c tires work on a 29er? Answer -- lets define "work" first.
What tire should I use? Answer -- That depends...are you going to make a swing for your kids, or put it on your car?
Would you buy a 29er specific crank? Answer -- huh?
Why do we not have 29er specific gearing (my triple front and 9 speed rear does not give me adequate gear combinations)? Answer -- Are you serious? Reply -- YES!
How do you like my bike set up (imagine a very silly looking bike...like mine)? Answer -- I don't, and everyone will flame me for saying so...hey, you asked...
Friends, these are REAL questions posted up in the past week. I can not really blame a guy for swinging at a pitches like those.
babes in the woods
Those pitches are easy pickings. They are the equivalent of a minor league pitcher facing major league batting for the first time.
