Starting out flat

I can hardly believe it's been over two weeks since Froze Toes. Where has that time gone in my little world? That's easy. I went on a business trip for a few days and then I got sick. That's about it. The rest is just ugly details.

Today was a big and important day. My coughing and hacking had subsided enough that I decided to brave the upper 40's temperatures and go ride my bike. Wow, what a difference a couple of weeks makes.

I didn't ride very long. After about an hour I really didn't feel much like riding any more anyway. I didn't ride particularly hard either. When I got home I proved that to myself by downloading my SRM file. The powermeter doesn't lie. I didn't ride very hard.

Ah, but I'm not going to be too upset about it. I keep telling myself the watts will come back. It's early in the season. Besides, I'm not truly over this thing yet. I figure as long as I still have something of a cough going on I have a real (as in medical) excuse.

There's a real lesson in there though. It's why I don't really ever plan to take an "off season". The older you get, the faster you lose fitness and the harder it is to get it back.
