In a spot of difficulty

Last night I decided to attend the club ride for some fun. Several people had contacted me earlier in the day and informed me that some old friends would be there, so I had to show up.

It was a good spirited ride that had efforts punctuated with recovery sessions as the group re-convened. These recovery bouts often hold great conversation and last night was no exception. Evey time Guy found himself off the back, he had something clever to say once he regained pace with the peleton. One of my favorite ones was, "the pace seemed to go up on that climb back there and I found myself in a spot of difficulty".

There was lots of Tour talk also and I was happy to engage in some discussion with like minded people. Seems a few people also that feel that this years champion is all but forgotten by the media as they discuss what the third place rider is doing in his spare time. I will be the first to state my appreciation for what Lance does for American cycling, but his PR is getting old and is infecting sports news. I hope his new team serves their sponsors well and widens the eyes of thousands of Americans to this sport...and I hope Contador smokes him again next year.

On the final stretch of last nights ride, Switzerland's lone representative found himself in a spot of difficulty as his brute strength overpowered a spoke in his rear wheel. The failure could be heard for a great distance as the spoke stretched and popped like an overtightened guitar string. We all stopped to assist him with moral support. Another rider took one for the team and stepped on the landmine emplaced by some large breed of dog...that was a fairly large spot of difficulty.
