This is my TSB chart. It isn't exactly what I had planned for the state of my training right now. But then, when can you plan for getting sick?
See how TSB had been increasing from big negative to smaller negative? I had actually planned to let it get into the single digits on the minus side of zero until this weekend. My plan for this weekend, which was a three-day weekend here, was then to spike it downward again with a couple of really nice long rides. I was going to use the three days to put in plenty of hours, and to punctuate those hours with some good hard efforts - the climbing kind.
After the long weekend I had in mind a couple of nice recovery days and then a few days with enough TSS to maintain TSB at a nice, negative level. There's a race this weekend. I wanted to show up for it with only half a tank.
All those nice, tall blue bars tell the story of my long weekend. I spent it coughing my head off. My legs pedaled zero. So much for Plan A. Now I need a Plan B.
Today was a test, another getting to know you ride. My legs, while strong, felt anything but fresh. If I really killed myself this week I might be able to put myself back on the original plan; but I'm not sure it makes sense to try to push TSB back into negative territory by the weekend. My schedule isn't going to allow that to happen anyway.
I think this race will just have to fall under the group ride category for me.
Not sure I understand..
I know that nature is what it is, and getting sick has changed your plans (my plans seem to get changed that way a lot, lately), but why would you plan to show up with half a tank...or is that a typo?
I would not sweat it...Froze Toes is always crazy anyway. ...and they are calling for 1-4 inches of snow by tomorrow night. Regardless, this race always seems observe the full spectrum on athletes. You will see pack fodder, squirrels that have no business riding near others, and guys that will appear to have trained all winter to peak for this "A" event. My point is, it is early in the season, and this race is a wild card at best...do not sweat it.
That's no typo
It's not a typo. Froze Toes is a training race, so I'd planned to see what kind of performance I got with a TSB in the "half tank" range.
One of the biggest challenges of training and monitoring performance is getting the numbers to line up with actual performance. Races give you really good feedback on what performance level you can achieve on that particular day.
