$@&*!!! Sick Again.

Unit's picture

For cry'n out loud! I went home last night and rode the trainer for a bit...nothing special, just a lot of low cadence, out of the saddle work (simulated steeps), and I later went to bed where I (for a change) slept like a rock. I really did not expect that I would wake up feeling like this!

My throat feels like I swallowed a cheese grater. I slept about 9 straight hours but I feel like I never hit the pillow. What gives? Could I have some immune deficiency?

I really have nothing of interest to share today. I have not bought anything for my bike, I have not hung any new parts...I have not even had to do any maintenance on my bikes. They are all working just fine as they are. I do need to buy some new bottle cages (I gave my old ones to 2-old for his new bling-speed)...but how exciting is shopping for bottle cages?

I guess that is something in itself...I need and want practically nothing! My bikes are nearly perfect (I say "nearly" because nothing mechanical ever ever truly perfect). It is a nice feeling to need/want nothing....well, that is not really true, I want and need to be well and in better shape!

Another ice storm is falling upon us. All schools are closed, and there is little traffic outside. It would be a perfect day to put the studs on and go road raging...but I am sick.

I hope everyone reading this is better able to get out and enjoy the conditions...I think it would be a lot of fun to be out riding in this stuff!

Ya right

I'm good on that, you talk of being sick, these conditions are prime for ripping the body apart and causing sickness. I'm all for riding in the snow, but when it's 13 degrees, and sleeting like hell, well lets just say I'm good. Maybe tommorow when it clears up...

Sucks to hear your sick again, you and two old have been low on luck when it comes to staying healthy. Hope you get feeling better soon so YOU can get out and ride in this crap.

Vitamin D?

It is the middle of winter. You are very likely very low in vitamin D stores. Not enough to cause rickets of course but well enough that the innate immunity of your body is greatly compromised. My wife and I have been taking 4000 IU of vitamin D since late spring. My son takes 2000 IU. No flew in our house, not much in the way of colds.

I am not gloating at all. Being sick sucks. I hate seeing the little ones in bed. Keeping vitamin D levels high during winter can help prevent getting the flu. And taking more vitamin D if/when you do get sick can help you get better. Vitamin D increases antimicrobial peptides in the human body. These peptides destroy the cell wall of viruses.

Why don't you go down to your local Walmart and get some vitamin D pills? It couldn't hurt.

Yes, probably...

I should probably take a strong look at my vitamin intake. I could probably benefit greatly from a little more C and D.

I will not be going down to Walmart though.

Vitamin C?

I thought that's what you were big on last year bobber? I take a multi and two vitamin C pills per day and havent been sick yet. But then again I've got something going wrong inside the body, might be due to lack of something...

Both Good

I'm still big on vitamin C as well. They do different things.

In full Bloom!

I am worse today. Even stayed home from work. Being sick is getting old.

Taking a butt-load of C in the form of fresh OJ, and sleeping a lot.

Thanks for all the great suggestions...I hope to be riding agian soon. With a little luck I will be riding with some of you!

Butt-load??

To think that drinking a lot of orange juice is a butt-load needs to be explored a bit. When I get a cold, I will typically take somewhere in the amount of 20 to 40 grams of vit C in a 24 hour period. Now if you look on your OJ can (or carton) you will see an amount of RDI in percent per serving. So what is the RDI for vitamin C? 90 mg for men. So what does your OJ container say? It's not untypical to see some that will list over 100% which is certainly good but let's just say it's at 100%. If you want to get 1000 mg (one gram), you will have to drink 11 to 12 servings!

Another factor is that the vitamin C molecule is very similar to glucose. So a sugary drink (like OJ) will actually compete with vit C for uptake into your cells.

This idea that you can get lots of vitamin C from drinking OJ needs to be dispelled. You may get a bit and it may offer a slight amount of help. But in my opinion, you are not getting a great deal and not getting the full benefit.
