I was reading an old blog entry the other day where a writer was referring to "salmon bikers". This term apparently refers to the act of riding ones bicycle on a congested city street into traffic much the way a salmon swims up stream against the current and eventually dies.
I thought to myself about how this sort of behavior must surely be isolated to only the most hardened messenger bikers in only the largest cities.
Today while returning from lunch I noticed more cyclists than ever weaving about the city streets. Jefferson City is hardly what I call a "big" city, and I seriously doubt we even have poser messengers. More than likely, there is an influx of new cyclists that are seeking alternatives to motorized travel (perhaps due to moving violations, or perhaps due to environmental or financial reasons...who knows).
Anyway, among these semi-urban cyclists I noticed several salmon bikers all of which were wearing headphones, hoods, and no helmet.
If you get the opportunity to spot one of these rare breeds of cyclists, enjoy the sighting. I can not imagine they will be around long. If you engage in such behavior yourself, please stop! I can not afford to loose you as a reader, and you are not helping me gain acceptance as a cyclist on these streets.
Be safe and have a good weekend!
Sing it loud!
I can't agree more with you! Even in the cycling meca of Boulder Colorado we too have plenty of Salmon bikers and they make the headlines often when they are involved in horrible accidents making cycling sound like such a dangerous activity.
Beautiful town Jeff City is.

salmon bikers
im probably one of the older riders here so...........as kids we were taught by the police dept. to ride on the left side of the road so drivers could see us better.....isnt that an oxymoron? Being taught wrong by the cops so they can write more tickets!!
