Rain + Recovery = Rollers

We got socked with the rain pretty good today. We're still getting it tonight. The rain didn't bother me for once, though. After my recent run of TSS I was ready to take one easy. Recovery.

Like so many others I have a problem with recovery rides. Many times I end up going too hard. That's not smart, because if you go too hard on the easy days you can't go as hard as you need to on the hard days.

I discovered the secret to going easy on recovery days today. Rollers. They're just the thing for recovery rides because they offer practically no resistance. It's like pedaling downhill all the time except there is no wind to pedal against.

I cranked out an hour's worth of roller time. My SRM said I'd rolled 40km. That's 25 miles. Average wattage required to do a 40k TT on rollers: 156 Watts.

I remember a day when I was thrilled to have ridden a whole hour at an average power = 165 Watts. Sure enough, there was a day when that wattage scored me TSS in the high 80's, maybe more.

Today 156 Watts for an hour got me only 30 TSS and change. Any way you look at it, that's progress.

I signed up for the state championship road race this morning. I'm planning for it to be my last race as a lowly Cat 5. By then I should have the requisite 10 mass-start races under my belt and it'll be time to say good-bye to my beginner status.
