This thing is as close to perfection as you can get... For a SS. Scandium tubing with carbon seat stays, EBB for easy tensioning, and a paint job that makes you want to ride down to the local motorcyle dive bar and encourage any of their pansy arses to come and throw down a quarter mile. I could see myself upgrading the KM real soon...
Do not do it.
Are you a dolt or what? Lightweight aluminum/carbon frame with thin wall tubing. Stop me when you start to recall the last SS frame you had that boasted something other than good ole' steel.
How do I love frame breakage? Let me count the ways...
G-wiz JRA suspension fork gives away
Hangs it on Units wall will ride another day
snags a sweet new Jamis Exile
Takes it out and rides a while
not too long
just riding along
frame tubes in a pile
Pick up pieces back to LBS
wait for warranty, what a mess
New Jamis rig shows up nice
build it up, slick as ice
what is this, a crack I spy
this wait so long, you will cry
same story now told twice!
And if I do recall
the writing was on the wall
G-wiz should not ride light
else he take a painful plight
stay out of the ER and keep it real
Never ride less than good ole' steal
Stick with the KM you did that right!
Very Nice
Poetic skills you have there Unit... Yes I know that I tend to be a bit more abusive to my bikes than most, but when you ride it like you stole it, you tend to be a bit more abusive.
And if you remember correctly, the Exile WAS steel, just super flemsy thin steel. I actually ran up on another post the other day about someone breaking one of the Exile frames. Someone pointed out how much the headtube extended down from the downtube. I took a look and then finally realized why what happened did, the headtube was way to long without a gusset.
In all honesty I'll most likely keep the KM for the fact that it will hold up better than any other. But this would be a piece of art that I would love to mount and roast some sweet singletrack with...
Word
Yeah, saying the Exile is steel is sort of like saying that Salsa is aluminum. Technically both statements are basically correct, but marketing departments of both companies will rarely make those sort of statements.
The KM is 100% Surly 4130 CroMoly steel. Tough to beat! Really tough to break.
