Perfection?

Not sure how to describe the day, but perfect might come close. The wind was howling, but the temp was probably in the high 70s. I took the family to our favorite eating place for some nice food, then visited a few popular attractions for the kids. By the time we got home, my wife was looking at me sideways, wondering when I was going to go out and enjoy this day solo.

Not long after that look, I headed out the door. I was feeling pretty beat from the lack of sleep lately, and the two rides I did while 2-old was here, but I had to go out and try the new gear and chain.

Everything worked great, and for a change I rode with some music playing. It made it impossible to enjoy the sounds of nature, but it also pumped me up to try some new moves. After about an hour and a half and a whole lot of success (in terms of learning new stuff) it was time to return to the family.

Oh, the picture? It seems someone is in the Halloween spirit already. They stood this very old tombstone up next to the trail. I tried, but the dates have weathered away...nothing is readable on it.

I should sleep well tonight knowing that I fully enjoyed this day. How did you do?

Tombstone

Looks like someone has moved the tombstone closer to the trail! This winter if you rub some snow lightly on the surface you can make out the words. I forget what the name was. We should look it up in the county records.

Tombstone....yeah, but

I can make out the name, but the stuff below that (dates?) I am not sure you could make them out....even with the snow trick.

I thought I had seen/heard of that thing before, but must have forgotten about it. It has been out there for years right?

As long as I remember . . .

its been there. There may be others in the area we just haven't discovered yet. This one has always been out of the ground since I've seen it. May have been moved from somewhere else.

Spooky...

It would be hard to imagine that we are riding on top of an old grave yard, but I guess that is possible....spooky.

Tombstone revisited

The recent storms were brutal to the trail at Binder Lake but at least the snow was good for something. Here is a photo of the tombstone found alongside the trail. The snow has brought out the name and dates even though they are severly eroded. Judging from the years I can see why!

Thats nuts...

1846??? Thats a really really old tombstone. Maybe someone should turn this in seeing it's an actual tombstone belonging to someone. Their family might find comfort putting it back in its rightful place. I honestly thought it was just a joke. BTW, just how bad is the damage at binder? I talked with nick and he said you guys went out for a few hours and only got a quarter mile cleared? Let us all know when the next trail day is and we'll be happy to help!

I dunno about the family...

But there is a Walser Bridge located not too far from Binder (see red circle here for location).

Also a Walser founded the town Liberal, Missouri. Apparently, there were several Civil War heroes named Walser. It is entirely possible that this was an important person.
