Ouachita Challenge photos - hike-a-bike

I've only been a mountain bike rider - any kind of mountain bike, let alone a fully rigid single speed 29er - for a number of months. Sometime this fall or early winter will be my Karate Monkey's 1st birthday. In all that considerable period of time, with the enormous amount of trail experience I've accumulated, I've never seen so many people walking bikes up steep trails as I did at the Ouachita Challenge.

There are four primary reasons for the hike-a-bike:

  1. The trail is too steep
  2. The trail is too technical
  3. The rider is too tired
  4. Any combination (including all) of the above

At the Ouachita Challenge it's usually choice #4.

This one was taken, I think, on the ascent of Blowout Mountain. The Ouachita Challenge cue sheet I cribbed together from the Ouachita Challenge web site and didn't even take along with me, let alone use, described this section of the trail thus:

Head up Blowout Mtn on the Ouachita Trail. It's 6 miles of steep, rocky and difficult terrain to the top and into the Aid station #1 at Fiddler Creek

I thought as long as I was struggling along pushing my ~30 pound Karate Monkey up Blowout Mountain on a narrow trail between trees and over rocks and roots I might as well also fumble in my jersey pocket for my camera and see if I could get a self-portrait of me gapping the rider behind me.

Speaking of other riders... To the last person out there we enjoyed the company of every one of them. I think many of them thought we must have been crazy to be doing the Ouachita Challenge on single speeds - crazy in a good way. We heard plenty of good natured barbs referring to our lack of gears. One guy said he had a spare cassette he could lend us. Personally I thought not having to choose which gear to ride in at any given point of time made the day a lot less mentally taxing.

Maybe that's why single speeds appeal to me. I don't have to be too smart to get by on one.

Good Photo

This is a good photo. It actually conveys a little tiredness. Wow, what an event. You guys did great to complete it. Were there any other SS 29's that you encountered?

lots of 29ers

I saw several rigid 29er single speeds, but there seemed to be a lot more that had gears and suspension.

The number of 29ers what WAY up over last year...and the podiums seem to indicate that the faster people are migrating towards the bigger wheels too....

Sydney Brown, 1st women
Chris Ploch, 2nd men's overall
Cameron Chamers, 1st single speed
Josh (sorry Josh, I don't know your last name), 3rd single speed

Great pics!

Thanks for the pictures. I was in the same place in the pack as you were. I leapfrogged with you and Unit a few times while you were fixing chains (that neon green bike is hard to miss). I was the woman in the red/orange/yellow jersey, blue Spot singlespeed. I followed Unit down one of those downhills - so much fun! Well worth the climbing. I agree with what you said - everyone I met before, during and after the race was a pleasure to talk to.

Cool!

Great to hear from your again! Sounds like you had a great time too.

Where are you from?

I'm from Boston. It's 37F

I'm from Boston. It's 37F and drizzling here now! If it weren't for the sunburn and poison ivy, I'd think I dreamed the whole thing. I did have a great time. I was afraid I'd be off the back and riding alone all day and I worried about making the cutoffs. When we hit the Ouachita trail I realized none of those would happen and I knew I could just have fun. It was easy with those great trails and all the nice people.

What was your time? I think I came in around 7:30, but we had to head right out to get to Little Rock and pack up the bikes (and eat!) and I never looked at the time or results.

Too funny!

Here in Central Missouri (Jefferson City) it is 38 and clear. I have the poison ivy and sunburn too. I never feared the time cuts...if you miss the cuts, you are already so frustrated with whatever mechanical(s) that caused you to miss the cuts, that you are probably ready to abandon.

Last year I finished in 6 hrs 20 min. This year I was less prepared and more focused on fun, so we (2-old and I) tied at 7:15.

One other thing we did right this year was take an extra night at the hotel so we could drive home comfortably on Monday!

Hope to see you next year!

In the meantime, create an account for yourself here (free) and post up!....I would love to hear about your riding in Boston!
