I spent a few minutes this afternoon designing a new interval protocol for myself. When I was done designing it, I saddled up on the trainer and put the interval protocol to the test.
I made it through the session, establishing an important data point. That is, I found there really is a whole world of interval workouts out there that can be accomplished as long as they're designed right.
The trick, of course, is to make them look so hard on paper that you have doubts about successfully completing them; but not so hard that you can't.
huh?
What are we looking at there? Can not read the X or Y axis. Guessing that it is time and power, but how long are the intervals and how high is the power.
I might guess that these are somewhere in the LT segment of your power range...and if so...should I also guess that Froze Toes has been postponed (otherwise, why are you hitting it so hard 2 days prior to a race)?
Forgive my ignorance, I have been living in a cave for the last 24 hours...
Froze Toes
Froze Toes is on. I'm planning to go. I'm not planning to be very fresh for it though. TSB will still be positive, but it will also be trending downward rapidly.
The intervals are 5 minutes long. There are 8 of them. The entire working session lasts just under an hour.
soooo
so your wattage was more consistent with VO2? I see.
I can tell you from my experience that this type of workout always seemed to have the opposite effect on my subsequent rides. To say it another way, after these types of workouts (2-3 days after) I always seemed to ride REALLY strong.
I once read where someone postulated that this type of workout (and sprint intervals) stimulated the muscle fibers and (for lack of proper terminology) shifted the muscles into high gear...they were supposedly more able to deal with the lactic acid buildup. I don't know the validity of that, but my riding buddies would comment on my strength on pulls during rides following this type of workout....perhaps you will experience the same and score the victory tomorrow?
It is funny, even when I did enough volume of this sort of workout to cause soreness, I still seemed to ride stronger. Riding sore sucked, but it never seemed to hurt my power output...unless I was REALLY sore.
I know it is not an "A" race for you, but here is to strong finish for 2-old....cheers!
Possible
It's possible I suppose. The proverbial "icing on the cake." But I'm not banking on that outcome. I'll take it if that's what happens but I'm not counting on it.
I wanted to achieve 100 TSS on the day. I ended up with about 112, which is significantly over my current CTL. I needed a lot more than that to drive TSB into negative territory. With today's workout and the race tomorrow I think it'll be back down there.
On a good note, my legs aren't sore today. My back is acting up a little, but I think that's more from all the trainer time I've been forced into lately. I hope that's what it is at least.
