One Hellova Tailwind

What a week. This was by far the best riding week I've had all year. It all really started with Wednesday's 2x20's, and it all wrapped up with todays hammer fest.

I'm already loving March alot more than February. Two awesome days of weather. February ended great with Friday's weather being similar to todays. I got a great road ride in at Jeff. I HAD to take off work early and get out and enjoy it. I got some great hill work in, and some good hard riding. All in all I put in just under 2 hours of riding, with about 32 miles total. It was the first road ride of the year that I truely had an awesome time. No music, just the humm of my tires on the road and the wind in my face. It was a windy day, no doubt.

I really wanted to go out and do a nice endurance ride yesterday but from the moment I woke up I knew that wasn't happening. My legs were toast from the past few days of riding. My legs havent been this taxed in a long time, and with next week being my rest and recovery week it couldnt be a better time to work em. So instead of going out for a long ride, I opted for nice urban ride. No pics sorry to report, but shortly I will have to get some vids for you all. I cleared a 11 step stairwell that was probably 7 feet from top to bottom drop. I had a blast riding around campus and just playing on anything I could find.

So today there was forcast of rain in the afternoon, and I really wanted to get in a good ride before the week ended. So I called up Dishman, and he said he was game to ride. So did a couple of other guys, but Dish and I were the only ones to meet this morning. Guess the rest had a bit to much to drink, and couldn't make it to the 9 am meeting to ride out. I enjoy riding with Mike, he's alot on the same playing feild as me, maybe a bit better, and he's always game to ride long.

So we headed out from the Burg, and hit about on of the only decent routes there are that don't have gravel. 16 miles of hell, that's what I knew the beggining was going to be. I will say this, the average wind speed today was 20 mph with gust up to 35 mph. That's hell my friend. It was coming out of the south, and the first part of our ride was going straight south. It sucked, bad. At the turning point we had an average of 12.2 mph and that 16 miles felt like 32. My legs were soar from the beggining and that part of the ride didn't help.

Oh, but then it was time to turn around. This was the only reason I took this route, I knew we'd have a 95 percent tailwind on the ride back. It was a freakin blast, hauling at 30 plus miles per hour on most parts, and even clearing hills going 30. It was a rolling hill course and we absolutely flew. What took us an hour and twenty minutes to do one way, only took us 45 the other. It was crazy fast compared to our sluggish speed at the start. So 35 miles down, and we were trying to figure out what we wanted to do. Neither of us really wanted to hit the headwind again, it was straight brutal. So we threw the bikes on the back of my Jeep and headed back to the turning point for the first ride. We wanted more...

We decided to to the exact route back to town, and we planned on basically doing a 30 minute interval. So thirty minutes later we had almost made it back to town, and I looked down at our average to see we had held 26.5 mph for the interval. We both had grins from ear to ear. I don't think we'd ever be able to match that again, unless the condition were just right. I'd venture to say we made the record for riding from Chilhowee to Warrensburg. Sure we did it with a tailwind, but that's just the way the cards fell.

So we put in about 55 miles today, and I am completely wiped out. Toast, done, stick a fork in me. Thank lord for the upcoming R and R week. We were actually supposed to race today, Heartland was supposed to have the first race up at Landahl but due to the soup trails, they cancelled it. No biggie, I'm cool with that. Next weekend is the first race in the Midwest Fat Tire Series. It's at Clinton Lake and granted they have it, I should be well rested and ready to see just how well I can do in Expert. I just hope they take it easy on me, I'll need some time adjusting to the new class. Then it's the first 6 hour of the season at Landahl the weekend following. Man I can't wait to hit the trails again, maybe, just maybe it'll be this weekend.
