I guess Two Olds post pretty much sums it up. You know no matter how bad a ride may seem to be at the time, it's always a good ride. I'm always just happy to be out turning the pedals, whether it be solo, or with a couple of good ol boys like today.
I took the week off from any real training, and had high hopes of a hammerfest today with Unit. Well it was a hammerfest, but not like one I had hoped for. It was Unit, Joe, and Lynn on the ride. Lynn took off a little early and left us to hammer up some serious hills, and put in some good miles.
I felt great at the beginning of the ride. We were JRA, and I attacked every hill we came upon. That only lasted for about an hour. We hit some seriously steep longer hills and for some reason I blew up. My HR hit the roof and there was no coming down. My legs lost all power, and I couldn't recover from any hard efforts.
That's pretty much when I decided just to take it easy and ride with the guys. We held some fast paces on certain sections, and took our time on the hills. The weather was awesome, a bit sticky and hot in places, but great overall. Unit left me in the dust as usual, and I was left with some very sore legs. It's the pain that you learn to love, that deep down feel good pain. I'm always game for that...
You left out some stuff
It was a great ride indeed!
A few items that you failed to mention include the virtual ownership of the roads we held today (we must have seen only 10 vehicles during the 3 hours we were out). It is really pleasant to ride like children (side by side) and not have to worry that motorists will get irate.
Another notable was the ford! We came screaming down Meadows Ford which is a winding narrow road. I topped out my 53x11 as I passed G (and the "Road Closed during HIGH WATER" sign. Around the last bend of the descent the road turned to soft dirt and gravel (the river had been WAY up). I skidded on the soft stuff and yelled back for all to stop! We rode across the ford which was perhaps half a foot deep and flowing fast. I have to admit I was a bit concerned that my wheels would wash out, but we all made it without incident.
Not your typical ride by any local standards, but a very good one!
