So yesterday was far from my day. It was Heartland Series Spoke Poney Showdown. A three hour race, a six hour race. I opted for the 6. It's been three long weeks of hard training, and I was hoping I would still have enough in the tank to do well at this race. Well, that went out the window midway.
My choice to DNF came after dropping my chain for the 8th time. Yup, that's right, my jank ass chopped up front derailure I had made to keep my chain from dropping keep shifting. I tightend it down hard the night before, and had raced on it once and ridden on it many times without incident. I guess the rock infested trails at Landahl were too much. We took off hard with a running start, and then hopped on the bikes and took off. I grabbed Kyle S's wheel, a guy I race with alot, and rode with him for the first three laps. I would drop the chain, get passed my 6 dudes, and then work my butt off to catch up. Well after 4 laps my back was stiff as a board, and I had already endoed twice because of my chain. I figured it was best not to push anything, with Ouachita being next weekend. I want to be in prime shape so I cut it short and headed home. I was pissed. Oh well, shit happens.
Today, Eric, and I went out to ride Blue River. We woke up early enough to get some good trail riding in. I was glad to be out riding at a nice leisurly pace. Ne ways, heres a few pics. I'm tired and off to bed. This week is R and R week, and then its off to Arkansas for Ouachita this weekend. Let's hope this week is no indication on how I'll do...
Results
Mine sucked, but Kyle Shour came in third in our age division... If I could have just keep it up for 3 more laps... The dude who won it was from Iowa I believe, he hauled. Average of 46 minutes per lap, 8 laps total. It was a 7.5 mile lap, and my goal was 50 minute laps... Needless to say that didn't happen.
You can learn a lot from a DNF
I should know, I have had a few. Sometimes it is good to concede the battle in favor of better use of resources elsewhere. Best of luck to you at the OC! That will be an epic.
Regardless of your finish in Arkansas, you will finish with a sense of accomplishment knowing that you did battle with some of the best terrain around!
Ouachita Challenge
Good luck at Ouachita this weekend! I'm hoping it won't be TOO miserably muddy. Sucks about Spoke Pony, I was there racing Duo with a teammate and the trail conditions were in PERFECT shape!
