Mexican fuel

Yesterday held a long ride in more ways than one.

It was a really nice day and I had resolved to blow out of work early to get in a longer ride, but first I had a meeting to attend. A couple of supplier representatives were slated to come into town and wanted to meet. They arrived a little late and wanted to take me to lunch. Free food is nice, so I deferred to them to choose the place. Mexican.

The food was good, but it always declares mutiny on my intestinal tract about an hour after consumption. So at three o'clock there I am doubled over in my office trying to figure out how to make the trek to the can. It is only about a hundred yards but it feels like running a marathon when you feel like there are a couple kittens trying to fight their way out of your GI-tract.

Hoping that problem was history, I later suited up and headed out to meet a training buddy. I must say the ride went really well for an hour or so. We did one of those totally unplanned routes where one of us would simply shout, "left" or "right" as we decided the route on the fly.

We did a bunch of hills (repeats of sorts) and I noticed that if we were going to make the club ride we better drop the ballast and get hammering. No such luck, we were 15 minutes behind the group, so we called to learn the route they were taking. Moments later we set off to try and intercept them.

Luckily we selected a good short cut and found them within 30 minutes. The group was ripe with talent and all appeared eager to turn the screws.

The increase in effort after the previous efforts must have kicked a bit more resistant Mexican food loose because my gut started wrenching again. As luck would have it this was merely some additional boost comprised entirely of gas-phase waste. Moments later I had ridden everyone off my wheel! Go figure?

In summary, last night was one hell of a workout. I felt good and so did the rest of the group (or so it appeared). We had some great pace-lines, and some ripping sprints. I sure hope this weekend holds nice weather so we can enjoy more long rides.

Lighting the fire. Something tells me I wouldn't want to be behind you in either case. I'm having Indian food for lunch and then riding later today. Let's hope for the best.
