What is this you ask? Did the government finally figure out I had super human powers and decide to do high secret testing to find out what it is that makes me such a badass? No, not at all, more or less the exact opposite. You see lately I've been having problems. It's been about a month strong now since I began having chest and heart pains. Heart rate will shoot through the roof on the most simple tasks, chest will tighten and breathing gets tough. I don't know what it is, and it's not me to go to the doctor. But after talking with pops, he made it clear that I was to go have it checked out immediately. So begins the barage of testing to see what exactly it is that is wrong.
I've had a minor problem since in highschool. It started in basketball. Randomly my heart would escalate to a high 180 plus pulse and it would feel as if I was going to pass out. Not a good feeling at all. The last episode such as the one above happend when we were up in Colorado in January boarding. But I just figured with the altitude it was no big deal. Well things have pretty much went down hill from there. Drinking makes it real bad, but working out doesn't seem to bother me. I can say that I haven't been able to lay down the power like normal, because my HR hits the roof too soon.
So they hooked me up to this heart monitor yesterday and I had to wear it for 24 hours. They wanted me to work out last night, and work out I did. I hit the trainer and decided to do 2x20's. I figured I wouldnt be able to actually do it but long story short, after a hell of alot of work I pulled it off. It was the hardest trainer ride to date this year, but at the end I had a sense of satisfaction that made me smile from ear to ear. I finished my 2x20's with an average of 30 mph. Sure it's on the trainer but its the fastest yet.
So today I went in for 3 hours of blood test... it sucked. I figured a night ride would sooth all the worries I've been having, and so off to Landahl I was. I got there right before dark, and had an awesome ride under the full moon. The trail actually still had snow and ice on 30+ percent of it. It was great riding conditions, the ice made it interesting. I ended up biffing pretty hard at the end and twisting my cleat so I only put in an hour and a half of riding. Good enough for me though, I was tired to begin with. I actually got to ride through the feilds without a light, it was an awesome feeling riding with just the moons light.
So there it is, I'm sure all this is just a small problem, and can be fixed. I'm still out there pushing it and training my little heart out. You can't keep a good man down...
This sounds familiar
Another blog I read from time to time related an experience quite a bit like yours, G. Check it out here and here.
No word on what it was with Jeff. Probably nobody knows. Hopefully it's nothing. Hopefully yours is nothing too. Let us know what you find out.
And for crying out loud, get a power meter dude. :) I wanna see what kind of power you make. I bet it's scary as all hell.
Very familiar
I think I have been on a ride or two with you when your little heart rate fit occurred. I went in last year for irregularities in my heart, and found that I have something going on, but the prognosis for me was to "live with it" and get it re-checked periodically to monitor progress.
I think we are all defective to some degree...some more than others...
Put a shirt on man!
Blood Test
Came back A-Ok. Good news for the morning, what's not good news? The weather. It's shit again, sleet coming down like crazy, and a giant system not to end till tommorow. Glad I got out last night!
Thanks two-old for the link, I read some of the comments and sounds like this is a fairly common thing with athletes. Well not too common but others have experienced the same feelings.
Good news
Thought you might like to see the canine version of the setup you wore for the day.
Yep, they do the same thing for dogs.
