Last night, my training plan called for riding 1h30m with 45 mins of TT effort just below threshold. Instead of following that plan, I opted to jump into the St. Charles (Momentum) ride. This is a 30+ mile route that when run uber fast is completed in roughly 1h14m. Last night, the ride was done in 1h16m. I was done in 1h25m.
Let me set the stage by saying I haven't done a lot of speed work this year. I've done a couple of TT's and 1 crit, but really that's about it. A lot of my work has been building power. In addition to that, I had 4 hours of sleep Sunday night and really didn't feel well all day. Regardless, I was in the front and working on the outbound leg of the ride. However, around the 30 minute mark, I just seized up. The pack accelerated and I just couldn't respond. I watched rider after rider leave me and knew the inevitable. Solo ride.
Ironically, I got my TT workout as I kept turning the pedals and actually started to feel better as the night went on. I ended up with almost an hour of solo ride time and I caught and passed several guys who also blew up. In the end, I got my workout and also found my legs, so all wasn't lost.
It was good to see BugMan out on the ride, I just wished I could have stayed with the group to talk with him more.
Sounds like the typical
Sounds like the typical Monday night right being uber fast! To bad I missed you, be back intown middle of next week, so maybe I will see you the following week out there.
Way to go Hannibal!
Glad you are getting your ass handed to you. That is a great thing to have on a training ride--so you can prevent it in a race.
amen to that!
Yeah, I wouldn't have made that mistake in the race. Didn't feel strong and then made a strong pull early on. Rookie in every way.
Wish I could have been there
While I enjoyed my run up the Riverfront Trail, I would much rather have been hugging your rear wheel on the St. Charles ride. And, it would have kep me from a really crappy Cardinals game -- albeit one with a great view, so I shouldn't complain.
