I have been trying to get in touch with Rob Pennell of Badger Cycles

Mark EWERS's picture

Badger Cycles LogoI don't understand what's going on at Badger Cycles. I can't seem to get a return call or email from Rob Pennell of Badger Cycles. Unfortunately the same is true of the only other Badger Cycles employee I know of, Josh Patterson.

What's going on, guys?

I've been trying unsuccessfully for quite some time now to get in touch with either Rob Pennell or Josh Patterson of Badger Cycles. I'm very frustrated because they do not return phone calls or email.

Short of sending Rob Pennel, owner of Badger Cycles, a certified letter, I really have no way to know whether he has been receiving my messages. If I were to send a certified letter, at least then I would know my message had been received. Before I go to that much trouble, I'll take the chance that Rob Pennell of Badger Cycles reads my blog.

Rob, if you're reading this, I would appreciate a call. Josh Patterson, same for you. If either of you Badger Cycles guys happens to read this, one of your customers is wondering why you have not been returning his calls or email.

badger has terrible customer service

Guest (not verified) wrote 6 years 29 weeks ago

i completely agree. i finally got my frame and it is totally f'ed up. and now they wont do anything about it. they welded the seat stays off center as verified by 2 different shops. so i waited for 7 months for my frame that i was supposed to get in 2 months that is not ridable and they wont bother to contact me. the rear wheel wont sit in the drops straight. rob sucks !!!!

i dont know whats wrong with

Guest (not verified) wrote 6 years 29 weeks ago

i dont know whats wrong with those guys but they totally screwed me over as well.

badger

Guest (not verified) wrote 6 years 24 weeks ago

screwed me over on a touring frame and a fork that is all "forked" up. Frame too small, braze on's out of place, won't return calls or e-mails. Isn't worthy of living in the State of Kansas.

Wow, this is a surprise. Me too.

Guest (not verified) wrote 6 years 29 weeks ago

Wow, it is strange that you don't see this echoed elsewhere. I thought I was the only one!

He will not return my calls either, and I gave up on e-mail a long time ago. I just wish he would give me my money back!

post it on mtbr - i'm sure

Guest (not verified) wrote 6 years 29 weeks ago

post it on mtbr - i'm sure you'll get rob and others to get fired up. just be political though - since they censor it pretty hard.

Yes, I am the guy that posted up the long series of the build of my custom Badger. I had a good working relationship with Josh and Rob, and received my frame a few months back (you may recall, I said a lot of really nice things about Badger, and they even had a link on their website to my blog...until a day or two ago. Now that link has disappeared.

I have been waiting for the rest of my parts spec. for that build to arrive for better than a month now. I have been patient for quite a while, but have not had my phone calls, or emails responded to in several weeks. I am trying to remain positive about this, and am hoping for the best.

Bueller, Bueller?

sarriman (not verified) wrote 6 years 28 weeks ago

Did you see this one over on the stlbiking forum?

"word has it that Rob's son was in a very serious accident in Texas and he has been running back and forth taking care of business and family"

Give me a break man! "word has it?" It reminds me of that Ferris Bueler thing about his being sick. My best friend's sister's boyfriend heard from this guy... whatever.

Um, he's sick

Ferris Bueller (not verified) wrote 6 years 28 weeks ago

Bueller?....... Bueller?.......Bueller?"

Um, he's sick. My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with a girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

Me Too

FrankBattle (not verified) wrote 6 years 28 weeks ago

Glad I'm not alone. If it is something bad, I hope it works out. I just wish I could drive down there to pick up my frame .. I hope he surfaces soon. Voicemail is full, and no response on his cell.

Poor guy. I just hope my frame was completed properly before he started having some trouble.

g-wiz's picture

Poor Guy?

g-wiz wrote 6 years 28 weeks ago

Are you serious? Poor guy is that last thing I'd say for this cat. He's obviously screwed around quit a few folks, and since he owes them what they've paid for he needs to give it to them. You don't run a business like this and you don't treat your customers like this. Word has it he's still been traveling and racing, and his team is still out there sporting the Badger outifits. This is bullshit, and no, I have nothing to really do with the guy. Bottom line is he his not fulfilling his obligations.

Oh, I agree he needs to

FrankBattle (not verified) wrote 6 years 28 weeks ago

Oh, I agree he needs to fulfill his obligations, especially when they are paid obligations. For full disclosure, he has my money and I have no frame yet, so I am in the same screwed boat as many. I'm just trying to give him the benefit of some doubt.

He could and should be handling this a WHOLE LOT better, but I'll hopefully get my frame and would gladly never do business with him again. Prefer to do business with someone more reliable.

Cursing him out won't do me much good. But to say I am disappointed will be a bit of an understatement.

Update

FrankBattle (not verified) wrote 6 years 27 weeks ago

Contacted another industry person (not a frame designer) who recommended Rob to me and here is the update:

.. snip ..
to me

show details
12:30 am (4 hours ago)
Hi Xxxxx,

I know that your frame is done because I have seen it. Rob had some
really bad things happen in the last 2 months. His ex-wife got into a
car accident with his son and his son was hurt very bad. Rob has been
taking his son around to head trauma specialists in St. Louis and
Houston and his son has had 3 brain surgeries in Houston. He just got
home from the last surgery last Thursday and should be starting back
to work now.

I know for a fact that he is not trying to scam anyone. I know that
frames have been made and I was even working with Spectrum powder
works on behalf of Rob so that the frames were painted.

For your bike are you going with Campy, Sram or Shimano?

Unit's picture

I wish him the best...

Unit wrote 6 years 27 weeks ago

I hope things work out for him.

In efforts to remove burden from Rob during these troubling times, I have requested (via email to Josh and Rob) a refund for the (OE purchase) parts I ordered for my bike (Badger has my money, but I have not received my parts). Hopefully someone is handling the finances for the company, and I will have my refund soon...

I will definately keep you posted.....It will be so cool to finally finish this build!

After waiting as long as I

Guest (not verified) wrote 6 years 27 weeks ago

After waiting as long as I have, on several bikes and refunds, I have given up hope. I'm seriously disappointed as I had known Rob for a while and he seemed to be a stand up guy. So much for trusting people. I will never order a custom bike from someone who is not within driving distance. That way I can drive three and yell in person if this happens again. Best of luck to all of you waiting. My condolences.

Lay off of Rob

Marcus W (not verified) wrote 6 years 27 weeks ago

Since the cat is out of the bag here I will back him up. I spoke to Rob a few weeks ago. Yeah, he's had delays. His awesome painter went tits-up so he had to get hooked up with spectrum. Then this happens to his son. You tell him to his face that he should ignore his son during this time and concentrate on building some bikes. Better yet, look yourself in the mirror and tell yourself that. You people who are on his case are worthless sacks of skin. I wouldn't walk across the street to piss on your head if it were on fire. The guy has enough issues right now. Leave him alone, he will get to your frame when this is all cleared up. Rob is a stand-up guy and won't forget his obligations however, his obligation to his family trumps all other obligations. If you don't understand that, I feel sorry for your soulless, worthless, empty existence.

Speaking of issues

Mark EWERS wrote 6 years 27 weeks ago

We all have them, you know. Some worse than others.

g-wiz's picture

Who the hell do you think you are?

g-wiz wrote 6 years 27 weeks ago

I understand that Rob may have some family issues going on, but you do not leave your customers in the dark. They've made this wonderful invention called the e-mail which takes 2 seconds to send a message to everyone of your customers. Alls it has to say is "Family problems, will be in touch ASAP..." How hard is that? It's been months for some of these guys and I know that he has had at least a moment or two to do this during that time. Your comments above about pissing on our head is completely uncalled for, and it's obvious you're not the one with money lost to Rob because of unfilled obligations. Just thought I'd rebutle and let you know that yes, it is unfortunate that Rob has had issues, but once again, you don't bite the hand that feeds.

Oh ya, and go fuck yourself for coming on here and talking shit. I hope one day someone leaves you hanging on a custom build or parts, then maybe you'll understand the other side of the story...

Leave Rob Alone!

Unit wrote 6 years 25 weeks ago

According to comments on the St. Louis forum and Frameforum:

Some Badger sponsored rider is claiming that Rob is done building frames.

Additionally, a guy at Anvil (a company that sells frame building supplies) is trying to reach Rob also and not having success.

I do not know the validity of those statements, just passing the info on.

Hopefully, all will be resolved soon!

he changed his phone

Guest (not verified) wrote 6 years 25 weeks ago

rob is a piece of shit. he has had these problem well before his problem with his son. and shame on him for using his poor son for an excuse. he has my money (all of it) and the frame he fucked up. he wont call or write. wont even tell me what that fuck is going on.

Why isn't this on mtbr?

Guest (not verified) wrote 6 years 25 weeks ago

With all this drama, why hasn't any of this been posted on mtbr? There is no telling how many clients have paid for merchandise they may never receive. It seems like the mtbr community should be aware in case there are potential buyers ready to drop cash for something they will never receive. Everyone has "life issues", but stealing is stealing. Anyone with a shred of ethics would have the decency to contact their customers.

This sounds more like theft than anything else. Good luck to all of you who have dropped money to this guy.

Fuck him.

Guest (not verified) wrote 6 years 25 weeks ago

Not to belittle any of the previous complaints, but I had paid for four frames for customers of mine. I have now had to give all of those customers refunds for that money. Do the math. I'm ready to drive to Kansas and just wait outside his house until he comes home. I don't know what else to do.

g-wiz's picture

Legal Issues?

g-wiz wrote 6 years 25 weeks ago

Did any of you all have a signed contract with Rob? I didn't know how the custom build process begins, but I'm pretty sure I'd ask for one if I was about to send over 1500 dollars for a frame. There has to be some sort of legal issue involved with all of your guys complaints.

I will talk with some legal friends of mine on the issue, to see if there is anything we can help you guys out with.

Rob is not using his son as

Guest (not verified) wrote 6 years 25 weeks ago

Rob is not using his son as an excuse. His son was very seriously injured, and has endured 3-4 major surgeries. That has been the first and foremost thing on his mind for a while, and he hasn't really be able to concentrate on anything else for a while. There was a significant chance that his son could have died.

I'm not making excuses for him, b/c he could (and should) have done a better job of communicating, but he's been hit pretty hard with things that have been out of his control, including issues with painters delaying frames prior to the accident.

My suggestion would be a polite phone call or email to Josh. I know many people are pissed (and rightfully so), but do you honestly think that calling and leaving a threatening voicemail is going to get you a return call? [I'm not saying all posting here have done such, but I know some have].

Life throws us curveballs once in a while. Rob's getting his family straightened out, and I'm confident that he'll come through on his obligations once he gotten his family taken care of.

He will continue to get slamed

Guest (not verified) wrote 6 years 25 weeks ago

Being a father, I am simpathetic to his current situation. But my frame was promised back in March! I lost contact with him in May. He missed his obligation with me so I have requested a refund of money that was sent to him 15 months ago! Give me my damn Money back.

"that have been out of his

Guest (not verified) wrote 6 years 25 weeks ago

that have been out of his control, including issues with painters delaying frames prior to the accident.

lame.....the one thing he can control is communication with his customers. he has failed. he can control giving people the money they gave him. he can control calling someone. he can control emailing someone. he had his number changed. what a pansey. yeah run from your problems rather then being a man an standing up to face them.

"but do you honestly think that calling and leaving a threatening voicemail is going to get you a return call? [I'm not saying all posting here have done such, but I know some have]."

being nice an forgiving has not gotten anyone anywhere thus far. he has put people in really bad situations. the poor guy that works with him josh is left to answer for all his empty promises. i feel sorry for josh.

i waited to long to get a bike that was promised in 2 months. i totally could have gone somewhere else and i still would have thought rob was a great guy. instead i get a bike totally late, then totally fucked up, then i sent it back to him and hear nothing from him. he fucked my racing season, and me.

there is no excuse. i have had major family issues as well, but when i needed to focus on my family i followed up with the people that were counting on me and they understood.

Sure. Go ahead and wait

Guest (not verified) wrote 6 years 24 weeks ago

Sure. Go ahead and wait outside his house to kick his ass. See what hospital that gets you in.

Everybody seems to think that he can just "fire off an email" to you to let you know what's going on every 30 seconds. The guy gets 30-50 phone calls a day. When you sit in a hospital with your kid for 5 days straight, do you really think the first thing you're going to want to do after you leave to go to your hotel room is whip out your laptop or start calling back some guy about why his bike is 2 weeks late? He was probably worrying about more important things.

Give the man a little bit of time to get his life back in order. His kid nearly died. I hope none of you ever have to endure what Rob has over the last 6 months.

Bike racers can be some of the whiniest bitches on the planet.

It really comes down to

Guest (not verified) wrote 6 years 24 weeks ago

It really comes down to communication though doesn't it. What would a mass email have hurt? How long would it have taken for Rob to have Josh put a note on the website? Is it reasonable to think that people would not be hurt, mad, upset, or a bit angry if you have a lot of collective money?

I can sympathize with what Rob has gone through. I am truly happy to hear that his son will be well. I doubt that anyone here is really ripping on Rob for dealing with his son. As stated several places, Rob has had issues far before any of this happened. This is of course compounded by his son's accident. The issue is how he handled his personal problems in light of his business responsibilities.

Rob comes from the world of big business. If he had anything like this happen in hi previous job, he would have been fired long ago. If I didn't show up for my job, even for a good reason like this, without talking to customers and superiors my business would fail. There seems to be a common disconnect between the world of "real," business and frame builders. Rob has a business. He's a one man show. When you take this much money from customers, you owe it to them to contact them if something happens, period. It is his responsibility to contact customers, because if he doesn't no one will.

If you look at the frames that are coming out of his shop, they are for friends. They are people who know Rob and who have seen Rob throughout this. They are people who could have helped Rob by passing on note or saying, "hey Rob, maybe you should put something on your website, people are pissed." That he would come back, or presumably work on friends bikes while we all wait with nothing on ours is ludicrous. I would be ashamed to post up that if it were my bike.

Guest (not verified) wrote 6 years 24 weeks ago

That is really not called for. The last thing anyone here needs is for someone to go postal and do something stupid. The shittiest thing about all of this is that it ultimately falls on Rob to do what he can to make it right. The bottom line is, if he does not or will not fix these issues, there is really nothing you can do about it. I am in the same situation as the rest of you, and this is the conclusion that I have come to. I am hoping that all of this will work it self out. If it takes a year or more, I'll just be glad to get something for my money as opposed to nothing.

Update: I got my frame ..

FrankBattle (not verified) wrote 6 years 22 weeks ago

Just an update. As mentioned, he is starting to get through is backlog. I ordered a road frame from him. I got it a few days.

Man, is it nice .. wow. Just be patient. For reference, I ordered in March.

I was never mean to the guy, but I left a few unreturned messages until I found out what he was going through. Once he gets back on his feet completely, I'd do business with him again. But each person is different.

His word ain't worth crap

Guest (not verified) wrote 6 years 21 weeks ago

My Badger frame is too short and the steer tube was cut waaaaaay too short. What a JERK. Send him back to Texas.

HOGWASH

Guest (not verified) wrote 6 years 18 weeks ago

His problems date back further than his son's accident. He sucked beforehand and will only suck harder now. No service, crooked or broken frames, etc.......

I do feel bad for anyone in his situation, but, he pulled the same crap before. PERIOD!!

Most of his customers are not whinning racers either. They are just riders.

one year and counting

Guest (not verified) wrote 6 years 15 weeks ago

Rob was having many many service problems well before the tragedies with his family. Prior to that all happening, I know knew of two people who had ordered bikes from him in 06 who still don't have their frames. I know two people who were sent the wrong frames! One of them had to sell his on Ebay cause Rob wouldn't return his messages.

I've been waiting for my frame for a year. I was told it was "built" last winter and that paint would take a "few weeks." In June I got a phone call from him. He yelled at me on the phone for 5 minutes and told me I'd get my frame when it was done.

WTF?

Rob's problem is that he doesn't know how to run a business.

I wrote him out a check pif for the bike, and waited,
and waited, now, it's coming close to a year, and word on the street, is he's flown the coop, and nobody can get ahold of him, has anyone organized a group of people together with a lawyer friend for advise.?

keep in touch,
