I get to be the kid

I tell you, it's an inside out world. I went out for a spin today, and the story that came alive was one of those ass-backwards "How did we get ourselves here?" kind of things. I don't know if you call it irony or satire or what. I'll let you decide.

I hadn't been on my Karate Monkey for a while but I needed something recovery-ish, so I decided to do a little cyclocross style riding. There's this big grassy field nearby that's perfect for that sort of thing. I just wanted an easy spin so I figured about 30-45 minutes of riding around in the sun would be great. We had another one of those best-ever Fall days going. No way I was going to miss it. So far so good. The upside down world thing happened when I got on the grass.

I'd just started tooling around when out from behind a bunch of bushes comes this kid on a motorbike. His bike's got these little wheels, maybe 18" in diameter. The kid was just puttering around the field just like me as far as I could tell. He appeared to be maybe 8-10 years old.

But then as I rounded the bushes he'd come away from, I see his dad sitting there in a folding chair. He's sitting in the shade reading a newspaper while his kid putters around this field!

The first thought that popped into my head was how inside out this situation was. It's the kids who are supposed to have all the energy, right? Shouldn't he be the one pedaling a bike? If you were in charge of putting the characters in place, you'd put the old guy in the chair in the shade reading the paper, wouldn't you? That would leave dad, who's trying to hold onto his youth, to ride the motorbike.

Come to think of it, this isn't really inside out at all. Everyone's just shifted one place except me. I looped around and took the kid's place pedaling the bike. Hey, I kind of like that idea.
