I had one of those training sessions today that we all probably have from time to time. You know the type where you begin to question everything from the moment you start pedaling? Even after a considerable amount of time I simply could not get to feeling good or comfortable and at no time did I ever feel strong.
Several times I heavily considered abandoning. My sensible side kept me turning the cranks. After all, an unfinished workout is worse than a bad workout. Ultimately, when I finished and got off the bike I felt better for having trained. Quitting never feels good, but sometimes finishing feels only slightly better.
In the past year of training, I have set and accomplished quite a few goals. This is great, and a rider can always enjoy reaching a goal. Somewhere along the line, some other things started happening too (even though they were not goals) like weight loss. I actually lost a pile of weight over the past year and while it was not a goal, it seemed pretty nifty and I came to enjoy the idea.
As you might have deduced, I reviewed some of my records. I do not keep many records, but what I do track showed me some interesting stuff. The most interesting observation aside from the weight loss over the past year I noticed that now my weight is going back up. I am not really concerned so much as interested in why it is going up.
I have not altered my eating habits but I have upped my training intensity and volume (my weight spiked immediately following the first hard training block). At first I thought perhaps the block resulted in some muscle inflammation and water retention, but I have long sense recovered. Subsequent blocks have resulted in localized bumps in weight, but after recovery I find that I do not return to the previous weight (prior to higher intensity/volume work load).
Like I said, it is not a concern or a goal. It is just an observation. It could be the sign of good things to come. I just hope that my next workout feels better than today did!
