Yesterday... a nice 45 minute recovery after saturday's churn and burn.
Today... couldnt let the absolutely be-a-u-ti-ful day go by. Time to once again conquer the roads. I started with a nice 15 minute ride to the lbs to see if anyone else was downs for a ride... Luckily there was one willing but I had to ride another 45 minutes solo to what till he got off work. The weather was something close to perfect, partly cloudy, 60 something, with a nice easy breeze...
Paul was the fella I rode with. Kinda of a cool cat, just got hitched, moved to Independence to help start a church, you know a straight shooter. The cool part? Unit, you'll like this one. Paul rides a Specialized Langster. Now this thing is different. Basically a road bike but he has two single freewheels. So yes, its a singlespeed roadbike. The cool thing, one sides a fixed, the other isnt. And whats even more different? Normally he has pegs on the back. I questioned him on this the first time I saw it and he pointed out that when riding fixed, the downhills will kill you. So he unclips, and rides on the back pegs, pretty cool. He opted for the non fixed as we were going on a nice 25 mile out and back. Great guy to ride with, kept up pretty good with that thing, but I made it easy on him and only rode one gear myself. Man was that fun! Unit, I feel you're pain on some of those hills now.
This is the kind of ride that makes it all worth it. You ever have those rides? The rides where the veiws seems to get better by the minute and the lungs just seems to never oversteam. My zen is getting back and I'm totally stoked.
A few weeks ago I had the privalage of talking with a running coach. He said something that really stuck in my mind: "In sports it's not if an injury will happen, it's what you're prepared to do to bounce back."
After some serious serious thought I have come to this conclusion. I plan on coming back like a fire lit bat out of hell on a mission to take over the world. I have made a complete commitment to becoming the absolute best I can be, and in my mind means being paid to do what I love. I'm young, still somewhat dumb ; ) , and for once in my life I have found something I truely have a passion and love for. You see I've always just done things have ass, but I was always into something. Hunting, fishing, baseball, basketball, football, cycling.... Well I've found my love, and am I ready to bounce back? You bet your arse I am, I just pray for those in my way. Lol, maybe thats a bit to much
On another note, heres and article for you. I've been working alot on my core lately. Well at least for the past 3 or 4 months and I'm really starting to see improvement not only in my workouts but in my cycing. http://www.bicycling.com/article/1,6610,s1-4-20-15681-1,00.html There it is, a simple workout that willl work all you need. If you dont understand how much the core effects your cycling, I suggest you do some research. I've been checking out some other things too, but I'll save those for another day. That's enough for now. Ride on my friends...
Pegs
I have seen people run pegs on the front for fix geared bikes, and in one case a guy had a custom bike built that had the pegs welded onto the fork legs. This is cool, but many fixie riders insist on not having brakes other than their legs...and would frown on pegs.
I have yet to convert a bike, but my plans do not involve riding a fixie on the road very much....I want to try scorching (fixed off road).
SS on the road? There is not much pain after a few rides...stick with it for a couple and you will learn how to ride it effectively...it is really not nearly as tough as people think.
how do you clip back in?
It seems like clipping back in on the fixie might get dicey. But then after slowing down to a stop and maybe falling over a few times I supposed you'd get pretty good at clipping in when the pedals are moving.
