Hello to all my fellow cyclist who have been more than fortunate enough to be riding for the past three weeks. Of course the weather has been great, my luck. The dislocated elbow is doing much better, but I must say, I'm like a little kid stuck in a glass bubble at the theme park. I quietly sit and watch everyone else have fun while I remain immobile, stuck, f***ed.
The trainer? I wish it a death only acceivable by tossing it from a jet plane and watching it crash to a horrid and miserable death. If I never had to see it again that would be nice, hell if I just didn't have to ride it for two more weeks straight I'd be happy.
So here's the deal. I actually got out on the roads of the new neighborhood the other day. Took both of my MTB steads out for a few short rides around the block. The elbow felt fine exept I can't pull up on the bars and jerky movements hurt.
This week I've started my strength training and this weekend I actually plan on doing a legit road ride. BUT, while I wait, lets here your WORST crash and injures. Also, how long were you out, and how the hell did you cope with it?
The docs said 6 weeks, I say 4. Well, I guess I'd be smart just to be safe, lets meet in the middle, and 5 will do. Good riding to those who can, to the others such as I, I feel your pain...
Its a toss up...
I have had several good ones:
1. Broke two ribs and tore some cartlidge when I came short trying to bunny hop onto the back of a truck (landed on the corner of the truck bed with my chest). That was before training was invented...so I felt pain, but no guilt from missed training days.
2. Broke an arm doing a tail whip off a dock at the mall. Landed hand first and the arm went squish. I recall getting up and the sweat started to pour out of me as I started to freak out.... The recovery time was short...may be a couple weeks? (after the surgery to re-set the bone that started healing wrong).
3. Worst of all, was a crash I had at a race track called Plantation. we funneled out of a starting gate 8 wide into a railed bridge that was at best 6 wide. We were raging and I was on the inside of the upcoming turn as we entered the bridge (I started from Gate 1). I did not let up and got ground up between the rider from Gate 2 and the chain link fence that prevented us form falling about 30 feet to the track below (the track made a 270 degree turn before going under the bridge we went over). Eight of us entered the bridge side by side...may be two made it through with out a yardsale. My helmet got ruined, my body got some scratches, cuts, and bruises, but worst of all....I lost my edge on that day. Anyone who knows me as a rider from those days will tell you I cooled off considerably after that accident...I never had "it" again after that day. That hesitation a serious rider gets when they are scared usually marks the end of their racing.
Broken ribs hurt like hell
I broke a couple of ribs on my left side when I crashed into a big bush going way too fast down a rocky roadway. The front wheel washed out and caught up in the bush, putting my ribs and the left grip on a collision course that left me gasping for air for a long time.
I eventually got up and rode home. It was years before I told anyone about it. Mom and dad would not have been happy so I kept it a secret. Almost 40 years later you can still see the difference left from right. Something tells me it's not going away.
