First Taste of Spring

The thought of riding indoors all weekend wouldn’t normally be very appealing. And it would be an overstatement to say it is appealing, but the prospect of cool temperatures and rain this weekend will very likely force me to train on rollers and I’m not dreading it.

A bit of inductive reasoning applied to the above should make it clear that I haven’t been training indoors for a bit. And it’s true. I haven’t. That is to say, I either haven’t been training at all or I’ve been able to get outside and ride on real actual pavement. The answer is: I’ve been doing both.

It’s been a busy week. Most of it has been life’s other challenges, the kind that take you away from the things you want to do. They’re the things you have to do. But the last couple of days have been good in that late afternoons have brought warmth and sunshine and dry pavement.

I got out after work both days. After a few days of no riding I don’t have a lot of good to say about them. What is it about that first day back? Riding feels so good for about 3 minutes. Then the legs start to burn and you wonder “where did my fitness go?”

Of course it isn’t gone. You just have to remember that it took months of effort to bring on this level of fitness. It won’t disappear over 3 days.

And sure enough, yesterday felt a lot better. Too bad my powermeter head was dead. Forgot to charge the battery. All I can say is it felt better, and the scenery seemed to go by pretty quickly. Pure Perceived Exertion. It’s a wonderful thing. Yesterday I was amazing. Prove me wrong!

So this weekend I’ll have both the time to train and a freshly charged SRM. So what if it’s indoors-only. Now that I’ve had a taste of fresh air and fast pavement, I can wait a little longer.
