Far From Perfect

Got the call from G-Wiz last night that we were riding (in spite of the approaching rain storm). So off we went to the trails.

Met up with Mike and G for what would be a short ride (since it gets dark earlier these days). The instant we hit the trails, it started raining. It was OK, it was a gentle rain, and it did not seem to impact the trails at all. Things were pretty fun...until I got the message.

My phone sends me messages when harsh weather is approaching, and last night it warned me of Tornadoes. The weather started getting worse, but still not really all that bad. The rain was coming down harder, but the trails were still holding up nicely. A look to the sky told me that we should probably cut this ride short and not get stupid. It was a lot of fun to ride in the cool rain though.

Just about the time that I was announcing that I was going to finish up the short section we were on and head back on the road, the sidewall of my tire opened up. Wouldn't you know it was on the exact same section of trail where I cut open my last tire (for those of you counting, this is 2 tires in only 3 rides).

This has been a terrible year for me as far as tires go. I think I have spent more money on tires this year than the previous 3 years combined....and now I need to spend more.

I really am looking forward to the day when a guy can buy a very heavy 29er tire...perhaps something in a UST, or better yet a DH tire with reinforced sidewalls.

TWO Dang Days!!!!

The picture is crappy at best (my phone takes bad photos), but look at this chain. I installed it Saturday (brand new), rode on it for about 8 miles Sunday, and another 6 miles yesterday. I noticed my drive train felt crunchy last night and thought it was odd b/c this is a "new" chain.

What you are seeing here is the total absence of a roller. I suppose it cracked and dropped off on the trail last night? This is unbelievable! It is hard to see, but it is the one in the middle.

That's crazy!

Never seen that one. Maybe if you just lubed up your chain once in a while instead of just putting a new one on every month! BTW, that tire thing sucks, I don't know how you did that where you did. I myself have split two Ignitor tires, and it sucks. Not only is it expensive but the ride is usually wrecked... Anyone know of a good lightweight durable tire? Ya, I know, those two words usually dont go together but it's worth a shot...

LOL!

Light weight, durable, AND cheap right? Wouldn't that be great!

I DID lube that chain. It was new too. Yes, I admit I abuse my chains, but heck, they don't last over a few weeks no matter what I do, so lubing more than once every couple weeks is rarely done.

My drive train is all good, there is practically zero wear on the cog and ring...it is just bad luck with the chains. I figure it is cheap to simply replace them often....rather than have them break mid ride.
