There was no way we weren't getting out to ride today... Nothing would stop us, not the 3 and a half hour beating I got on Clinton Lake yesterday, or the ridiculous drinking we put down last night. We called it a night around 3am and woke at 8 to get ready for the day. Our plan... A Katy Trail century.
Dishman and I hit the Katy about 10:30 this morning, with both Jake cross bikes in tow. We mounted up and headed out, and needless to say the first hour sucked. I felt like I was going to hurl with every pedal stroke. Jose and I had another run in last night, followed by some really good Leinenkugels Oktoberfest. It caught up with me today.
The Katy was the Katy, pretty calm, pretty boring. The weather couldn't have been better, and the wind was at a minimum. The ride went well, we had plans to ride to Rocheport, but I was a Sally today, and choose to cut it short. We ended up only going to Booneville from Sedalia. All in all we put in exactly 75 miles, a good day non the less.
The last 10 miles were something feirce... I was toast, completly wasted, running on E. I managed to make it, but not without feeling like crap. I really felt yesterdays ride. Clinton Lake is a freaking awesome trail, but unfortunatly it is one of the most brutal when it comes to rocks and roots. There are little to no flat smooth spots. 25 miles on my SS rigid and I was feeling it. If only I knew how much I would feel it today...
I'll let the pictures speak for the ride...
Helmet?
Sounds like a good ride, and an epic adventure. Never let your guard down though....never.
You would know...
Ya I know, I know... but if felt so dang nice without it. We actually had them on for the first leg of the journey and decided to put them on the back of Dishman's rack. Wrecking on the Katy though? Maybe if you completly zone out. I hit endless walnuts while not paying attention and never had any close calls, and I imagine that's the worst it'll probably get. Well except for those hedge apples, but not many were present...
I will not lecture
but it is complacency that can lead to disaster.
Riding without a helmet is a personal choice, just be sure you do not make it based on bad information/judgment.
There was no debris on the road where I crashed, I was riding a curve like I have thousands of times before. I was complacent, I let my guard down, I am going back to the doctor today to find out when I will be able to start riding again.
Some sections of that trail are pretty remote...think about it.
Good Call
Understandable.... By the way, hows the injuries healing? Maybe when you get back, you can change the pace up a bit by ripping some trails with me.
Doubtful
When I get back on the bike (I have no idea how long that will take), I am pretty sure that impacts will need to be kept to a maximum of zero. I am still walking with a limp, and any sort of instability (requiring ancillary muscles to flex) is quite painful.
On a positive note. I did get on my MTB yesterday to ride a down my street (100 feet or so with very easy pedaling to assess the hip functionality). The moment was fleeting though, there was very little joy, and the result was me scheduling a follow up doctor visit to figure out what I need to do to heal this hip.
I intend to do everything I can to get back in the saddle as soon as possible. Let me clarify that I will not get in the saddle if it jeopardizes the healing process.
Ahh, fall in Missoura
Man, if there is one thing I miss from Missoura it has to be cycling in the fall. Nice pics. For me, I got my start in cycling on the Katy Trail.
