This might give a little better idea of what the runup was like. I didn't really take a photo of the whole thing but you can see by looking at the backbround kind of how long and steep it was. Many racers were portaging the bike up this hill. This makes no sense to me. I would much rather push those 18 to 20 pounds up the hill than carry it.
are those re-bar?
It would appear that there are steel rods pointing up from the ground on the backside of that barrier.
They Don't Give Much
Yes it is re-bar. You don't want to hit one of those boards, they don't give much! And that's why bunny hopping is something you want to be very confident of. If you hit your front wheel, you are going over the bars and stand a good chance of breaking your clavical!
that is what I thought!
Flipping over one would be the last thing I would worry about.
They should, at minimum, put some protective caps on those suckers. One poor step and a guy could fall on one or put his foot down too close and pierce a calf...ouch!
Not Sticking Out
The angle of the sun makes it look like they are sticking out
but they really are very close to the board. I don't think there's much danger of a puncture.
