Wow, what a jam-packed Sunday this has been. First of all, sorry I do not have any ride photos to post up. I guess when the ride is really good, you just do not want to stop to pull out a camera.
The day started with the kids coming in and jumping on the bed (waking up my wife and I). I think this is a nice way to wake up especially since my kids were excited to go to the coffee shop!
A few minutes later, we were out the door and heading to the coffee joint. I ordered up a couple giant crocks of caffeine and soon my wife and I were up to speed with the kids. I received a couple text messages confirming that the ride was on for 9:00. Nice! My schedule was now filling up. Coffee with the family, a nice bike ride, followed by swimming with the boys, then a nice BBQ with my folks this evening!
So there we are at the LCS and my oldest son asks how long we are going to be there. I tell him another 30 minutes...enough time for him and his brother to custom roast some blended bean. Together they then started roasting beans that the barista blended for them. I had my doubts since they were not using the time charts for temperature and air flow, but the finished product smelled pretty good (I will find out tomorrow when we brew some).
A bit later (8:30ish) I was suited up and rolling out to meet Jason and a few others for the ride. I had no idea what we might do since we left the route undecided until we all met up. I made it to the park by 9:00 and it was decided that we would head out Tanner Bridge (way out) and go through Osage Bend before rolling over to Wardsville then back home.
The ride conditions were beyond description. I am not sure we could have asked for better weather. The group I was riding with was mostly older guys that used to tear up the race scene. Rotating through a pace line with these guys was pretty cool (they are a well oiled machine in spite of the fact that they have not raced together in several years).
I wish the ride could have gone all day long (sort of). The offerings from the LCS had me firing on all cylinders. I was really getting into the ride, but like all good things, it had to end. After all, I had some more plans with the family today! The group was pulling into the park, but I continued home after shouting "good day" as I broke from the group. I pulled out the phone and called my wife to synchronize schedules for the rest of the day.
Twenty minutes later I rolled into the garage and headed for the shower. As I was coming out of the bedroom partially dressed, my wife handed me a sandwich to eat before taking the boys to the pool where we swam for a little over 2 hours. Actually "swam" is not really a good term, we did a whole lot of playing, splashing, and other pool-related play. I guess it was a sufficient amount of activity because my youngest son walked out of the pool and proceeded to fall asleep in my arms, and the other two were asking to go home because they were tired.
If you think the idea of happy kids waking you up to start the day is a good thing, you know that later having one fall asleep in your arms is even better! I feel like a decent parent when I can play my kids hard enough that they ask to leave the pool because they are tired.
So now I am taking a little break to type this entry before we fire up the grill and put some more fuel in the tanks. After all, today was just a training day. By the end of the summer I hope my kids build enough base that it takes a lot more than 2 hours before they are off the back.
fun day Sunday
Looks like another typical Sunday fun day for you guys. When do they become journeymen barristas? They already know more about making coffee beans than 99% of the rest of us.
Good for you
Sounds like a perfect day all around. Cute kids (I like the "Shark Bait" shot). And roasting your own beans! Now that's living. Hope the coffee tastes good.
Drinking it now!
This stuff is great. Some of the beans in the blend started liberating oils due to the long roasting time. The result is a lot of flavors and a medium to high acidity.
Thanks for the kind words. My kids are a huge part of my life, and so is what they wear. My wife is a very creative clothing designer and she makes most of my kids clothing.
I did not talk about the riding all that much but it was great too. I got in a little over 95 K with a good pace. The only downside to the day is I ended up with a slight sunburn (I missed a couple spots with the sunblock). I am happy to say the kids appear to have had full coverage though.
