That is what I had planned for today, a great ride. I am not sure what to call what actually happened.
G-wiz and I met up and rolled out on what can really only be described as a great day for a road ride (this time of year, in this area of the country). There was a 5-10 MPH wind, and temperature was in the low to mid 40s. Fairly calm and fairly mild for what we might expect, so I can not blame the conditions for having a less than great ride.
My bike was dialed and worked great. Can not blame my equipment.
G does not have a road bike, so I built up an older Trek I have for him. I had to use my TT front end (which gives him a serious aerodynamic advantage) but I also had to use a 24mm CX box-section 36 spoke wheel which more than removes any advantage he might have felt from the aero bars. Perhaps part of me wanted to hinder him a bit going into this ride, since he has been training and is fast to begin with.
We took off with no particular route in mind, and no plan for ride duration either. After about 40 minutes of suffering and never really feeling warmed up or strong, I opted to cut the ride short to about an hour and 45...you see, it is hard to feel like you had a good ride when you ride with G.
I used to have fun sticking it to him from time to time, but this cat has it going on this year! He is strong and ready to roll.
I let him cut the wind for me a few times, then promptly pulled through with sprint-like form to try and hurt him. Ultimately, on every occasion as I hammered through (trying to drop his sorry ass), I found that the wind he was pushing for me was a little stouter than I had perceived from his wake.
I would have to conclude that it was a great ride, but I sure wish that I felt great while I was riding. I look forward to seeing G's race results this year.
