2008 Goal #1

Yes G, I really have been thinking about my goals for 2008. I have not yet finished the task, but I have committed to one goal. Others are in formation.

My first goal wasn't especially difficult to come up with. I think it follows fairly naturally from the bigger picture.

I recently repurchased my USA Cycling license. If you have one you know they ask you for your date of birth, which they use to calculate your racing age. Your racing age isn't necessarily your current age. Your racing age is the age you will be when the license expires.

I imagine young riders like this racing age business because every 5 years they get to bring their youth to an older class of racers. Maybe I don't speak for all of us, but as an older guy this thing about aging up to an older class is a little less about licking our proverbial chops over competing with a bunch of older guys, and a little more about becoming one of the older guys.

My 2008 USA Cycling license says my racing age is 50. I only started riding a few years ago. Talk about your wasted youth; I have a lot of riding to make up for. Do you see Goal #1 for 2008? For me, goal #1 in 2008 will be to get on a bike for a ride every day.

And today's no exception. Even though it's the shortest day of the year - yes, it's winter solstice, the first day of winter - I will ride. In fact, tonight is the December edition of the Castlewood night ride. It might be a bit muddy, but I plan to be there all the same. It seems especially fitting that at least one ride on the longest night of the year should be during the night.

Good luck

Every day?

Wow ambitious. Good luck.

I see very fit guys decades older than us riding around here - so old guys like you and I still have lots of good years left. :)

Yep apart from childhood, I only really started cycling a few years back, but fully addicted now.

Yep it seemed slightly brighter than yesterday when I got up - so happy the solstice is passed and things are moving in the right direction again.

Why not?

I thought, "Sure, why not ride every day?" Some won't think it much of an accomplishment I suppose; but I thought riding every single day would be a good way to mark my 50th year. And it does seem like a good habit to carry on for the next 50 or so years, don't you think?

I guess....

I guess I could throw down a goal like that, but in all honesty I can not realistically "ride" every day. It depends on how you define "ride" though.

If we lax things up a bit to include jacking around on a uni while my kids ride laps in front of the house, and lurching around practicing trials moves etc...then I guess I could make a similar objective...somehow, I don't think most people would call what I do a lot of the time "riding".

Your standards

Set your own standards. In the long run you're the only person to whom they will matter anyway.
