Tuesday trainer session

Mark EWERS's picture

The office grind simply would not let up today. By the time I had all the fun I could stand and knocked off for the day, suiting up for a ride was not completely out of the question. My Time Trial bike was right there, mounted up and ready in the trainer. TSB was sitting at a -17. I made a snap decision: time for a light day.

You know what? I felt better deciding to take one easy. If that's not a sure sign of fatigue I don't know what is.

Yesterday I did the first half of a 2x20 interval session so today I figured I'd do the second one. I thought that had a nice symmetry to it. Warm up, roll into a 20 minute interval and make some good wattage, cool down. About 45 minutes start to finish. There's a plan.

And a good plan it was. TSB should edge up a little tomorrow. I'll feel more fresh and ready to ride.

And there was a bit of extra goodness in today's ride. During my interval session I managed about 15 minutes down in the TT position - something I have not been able to do without pain since February. I'm not convinced that I'm better, but I'm starting to think the stretches Iron Maven recommended are helping me.

Good Improvement

Very good to hear that your back is improving. What kind of stretches did she give you if it's possible for you to share them?

Thanks Bobber

It is a PDF document that carries a copyright. I don't see that it is freely available on the Iron Maven site, so it's not clear to me whether I can share it.

I have sent Tracy an email to enquire about distribution. If you'd like you can also send her an email through her site. All the same, if I get the OK I will send you a copy.

and here I was thinking...

SRM Online

Mark EWERS wrote 2 years 46 weeks ago

!! That makes you the only other person I know of who has one.

I don't know how I would make it through those long winter training sessions without it.

I suspect it has capabilities I'm not aware of and have not been able to find. The screen I posted is really the only thing I know to do with it. Would you happen to know if there is more?

SRM Online

I believe that the PowerControl with the Online option simply streams the data from the crank to your computer at the rate at which it is collected, i.e., 200 Hz. What that mean is that you can generate a plot of torque vs. crank position, which might be interesting to look at.

Torque data

Mark EWERS wrote 2 years 46 weeks ago

Now that would be interesting. Any idea how to go about getting to it?

I don't believe the software I have provides any means to obtain it. Or maybe I should say, if it's there I have not seen it; and of course I haven't been looking for it.

Torque data

After I posted that comment, I had a look at the SRM manual online, because I couldn't quite understand why you wouldn't be using this function if you've got a PowerControl with an output port. As it turns out, you need to download and run a separate DOS program (free at www.srm.de) to see the torque display. I don't know if you'll learn anything useful by doing so, but at the very least it ought to make your trainer rides a bit more entertaining, at least for a while.

Torque Analysis

Mark EWERS wrote 2 years 46 weeks ago

I will have to give this a try. I had never bothered to even look at it because the site says the powercontrol must have the optional torque analysis function, which I took to be separate from the online function.

Even if it is available to me with the online function, it's not clear whether the torque display program records the data or merely displays it. I'll have to try it out for myself and see.

Please let us know

To be honest, I've never seen a PowerControl with an output port, much less used one. Thus, it's possible that I'm completely wrong about this, and you're right. So, let us know!

yup you need a dedicated output (the online basically transmits the display values to a PC, the torque spits out the raw measurements). A photo is in the link above of my unit with both outputs...
