Training and testing

I've heard it said before that training is testing and testing is training. For me today's training was a scripted test - a time trial, approximately one hour in length.

I wanted to learn a couple of things from the effort:

  • Whether my recent training program, which is really just doing all sorts of riding - hard or easy, rolling or hilly, road or trail - was doing me any good.
  • Whether my aching back had improved to the point that I could throw down for an hour.

First the bad news, by the end of this ride my back was not very happy. I was concerned I'd just earned myself another week or so off the bike. My back was barking enough to cut right through the pain and suffering of the extended effort. Not so good.

Sitting here now as I key this my back is not unlike it was before my ride today. I'm optimistic tomorrow I'll wake up just like I did this morning, ready to ride. Encouraging.

The good news was my test results showed good improvement. Just by the looks of the power distribution chart I'd say functional threshold has increased by 15-20 watts. Must be doing something right.

Back suggestions

Here's some suggestions for your back from my training Wiki:

And how about some numbers? What are your watts/kg at FTP?

Are you going to do the state TT in July?

Thanks for the link. I'll

Thanks for the link. I'll def check it out. Anything to help is welcome.

Numbers... numbers... I'll get back to you on that one. Need to do some homework and write it up as a full post. Great suggestion.

State TT: Almost certainly not. Here's an in-kind description of my back problems which are keeping me off my TT bike. I continue to be optimistic my back will improve in time but it isn't coming along quickly enough to make the state Time Trial.
