Time to ramp it down a little

We have a arrived. The first big event of the season - the Ouachita Challenge - is only a week away. I'm as fit as I'll ever be for it. If the weather had cooperated more I might be even a little fitter, but you gotta play the hand that's dealt, don't you know.

Performance manager's telling me I need to ramp it down a little this week if I'm going to have endurance enough to take on 60 miles in the mountains of Arkansas. CTL is around 110 or so and TSB is way down below. I'll come up for a big gulp of freshness this week and I'll be as ready as I'll ever be.

This won't be a taper by any means. I'll just be letting up some. I won't be adding intensity this week. I'll just do the same kinds of things I've been doing, only with a little less intensity and for shorter duration.

Take my latest workout for instance. Just a couple of hours' ride time on the road. I went out to the local park and rode laps on the rolling part. No big climbs and no sustained efforts. Six 11km laps at tempo speed. And with fairly decent repeatability too:

Rather odd weather for this part of the country at this time of year - rather warm and somewhat humid. Seems like the snow just melted and now I'm sweating up a storm. I unintentionally put myself at a hydration disadvantage on this ride.

I'll have to watch out for that next weekend. The Ouachita Challenge weather looks pretty decent for sitting around in the shade with beer in hand. For powering a fully-rigid single speed 29er sixty miles through the mountains -- not so much.

Watch Out

Looks like Chris Ploch is going to Ouachita. If you can hang with him, you are definitly fit!

He's not on my radar

He's not on my radar screen. He'll be so far over the horizon and gone ahead of me... I like him for a podium finish this year. Hopefully he'll bring it home.

hey thanks

Thanks for the good wishes. I do hope to podium this year but anything can happen in 60 miles. Just finishing is an accomplishment in itself, the first 7 miles are up hill. Good luck on the ridged ss! I'll have a cold one for ya at the finish line!

good to see you here!

Nice to hear from you. You are very correct about the chances of just about anything happening...but the more prepared you are the less those things seem to matter.

From the sounds of things, you are well prepared and I am sure your bike will be dialed.

I really hope you do hang out at the finish line long enough to see us...I have never had the opportunity to see on of the trophies (they are always gone and driving home by the time I get there).

Good luck, and I hope to see you.
