I'm enjoying this new direction in training. In a way I wish I had plenty of time and no obstacles to get in the way of training up for some "next" event; but unfortunately that's not the case. Rather than whine about it I fully intend to have as much fun with it as possible. Today weren't no exception.
First of all though, have a look at this:

I couldn't believe my eyes when I looked out the window and saw my thermometer this afternoon. No doubt it had been sitting in the sun because it wasn't anywhere near that warm out. I think we topped 90°F here today, a record high. Hey you know with a global warming induced furnace right outside my door I absolutely had to get out and ride in it.
I had in mind to ride tempo today. After an hour of that noise I checked Average Power and saw that I'd done just that. The problem with tempo is it isn't much fun. No way I could get off my bike after only an hour's training on the hottest day of the year (so far). What to do for fun? Throw down!
I found a little uphill section of road, a nice rise with - believe it or not - a speed limit sign right at the top. Perfect. Well almost perfect. I wanted to do 10 second seated efforts. As it turned out this little grade only afforded 7-8 seconds of neuromuscular chaos. I'll have to find a slightly longer one for next time. These things are fun!
What's watts? Too bad for me, I'm not officially a kilowatt guy. I had one interval where I averaged 1017 watts for 4 seconds. My best 5-second effort: a sub-kilowatt 986. I'm OK with it though. I did them seated.
Sprinter man!
Now you just have to top 2 kilowatts...
We need to ride some time so I can guesstimate how weak I have become.
I'll be happy with a kw
Yeah I don't think I'll be contesting many primes with these legs.
I hadn't thrown caution to the wind and opened the throttle like this in a very long time. I've just been too afraid of hurting my back. That's why I did them seated, BTW. I was happy when I woke up this morning that my back isn't complaining about it.
Who knows, maybe balls out sprinting is good for my back. It sure is fun. Accelerating from next to nothing to over 30mph uphill in just a few seconds under your own power is a screaming rush.
