My best recollection of the conversation I had while standing around waiting for the sweat to stop dripping after my ride tonight:
Woman walking a dog: You look hot.
Me: Yeah, it's really hot out today. I think I broke a sweat.
Woman: How far'd you ride?
Me: A little over 30 miles.
Woman: Thirty miles! In this heat?
Me: Uh, yeah.
Woman: How long did that take you?
Me: A little over an hour and a half. It was pretty hot.
Woman: Don't you worry about heat exhaustion or something?
Me: I guess it's something to think about, but I had plenty of water and I'm still sweating so...
Woman: I don't know... I have a friend who runs a lot. He doesn't go out to run when it gets this hot.
Me: I wouldn't either. On a bike the air cools me when I get up to speed.
Woman: Oh sure. I guess so. Well have a nice evening. Bye!
Me: Stay cool.
Milage
It does seem to be hard for non-cyclists to relate to the milage that we do. I have heard it is helpful to use a 4x conversion for an equivalent effort to jogging and moderate cycling. So perhaps about 7 miles of jogging would be equivalent to your 30 miles. Well, a 7 mile jog in this heat would still be pretty taxing I suppose.
Seven miles?
I can imagine running maybe one mile in this weather. I might walk two miles provided there was some reward at the other end.
