My 3-hour ride yesterday consisted of multiple loops at Castlewood Park. One reason I decided on Castlewood was to get an early look at a new trail, the Rollercoaster, recently cleared and opened buy the great guys over at GORC trails.
The Rollercoaster meanders off of and then back on to the Grotpeter trail at both cutoffs. In all it adds a bit over a mile to the Grotpeter. Ridden clockwise, a short and flat to mostly downhill section of the Grotpeter can now be replaced with a much longer up and down section.
The Rollercoaster is just the ticket for getting more of a workout on the trails.
Being a new trail - about a week old - the Rollercoaster is still in rough shape. There is still a lot of benching to be done. And like any new trail that's just been cut, it can beat you senseless in a few spots. Once the riding, walking and running public has had a chance to beat the lumps down some it's going to be just fine. But please, no ponies.
No worries getting lost. The Rollercoaster is fairly well marked. There are only a couple of places where it's easy to lose the trail. Fortunately the orange tape markings are easy to spot so picking it back up is a snap. Once the trail becomes worn in more - and that won't be long if yesterday's traffic levels continue - there won't be any wrong turns.
I'm proud to say I did my share of pounding out the trail yesterday. I'm feeling every one of the six circuits today.
