I wish I were outside biking right now. In the interest of full disclosure, I am inside, seated at the computer (obviously) with a cat on my lap as I watch "Jeopardy." Outside the sun shines bright, making it appear warmer than the 30 degrees the computer tells me is the current temperature. Meanwhile, my new cold-weather jacket hangs in the closet like a reserve player on the bench, saying "Put me in coach! Just give me a chance."
I would have cycled today, but I did not know the day would turn out this nice. According to last night's forecast, today would be cold and overcast with a chance of snow flurries. There was no promise of sunshine and, for January, moderate temperatures. So I planned my day accordingly. When I went for a run on the Nickel Plate, the forecast appeared to be accurate: it was overcast, and a few flurries were falling. After that, I went to the Y to ride the bike and do weights.
As I rode, my attenion fixed on the "Twilight Zone" episode on the TV monitor, I became aware of the light and warmth coming in the window behind me. The day had improved considerably since I traded the outdoors for in-, but no matter: I got my workout in, and there's an end. The Y is closed tomorrow. If the weather is favorable, perhaps I'll get out on my bike for the first ride in my new winter wear. That would be fitting for the first ride of new year.
As I've posted earlier, I've done more riding this year than ever before. It is entirely possible that I covered more miles in this year alone than in the previous 50 years combined. And I had never ridden in November or December before, and tomorrow, I may ride in the month of January for the first time. In terms of cycling, 2009 was a good year. I hope 2010 is an even better one. Now its just a matter of getting through the winter months until spring comes again, and then it's back to Monday nights at Mueller Road, and Tuesdays at Whitesides, and Wednesday nights in Chesterfield, and Thursday nights on Fruit Road, and ...
I'm looking forward to it. I hope you have much to look forward to, too.
